How can I become accepted as a Native American?
How can I become accepted as a Native American?
I wonder how many more of use real Americans (Born and raise in America of parents born and raised in America) there are out there. When can we stop being children of immigrants and start being Natives? Yes I also know that a big part of being ‘Native American’ is the culture and training of the old ways. Maybe before I die I will be accepted by some tribe an honorary member. There is no other way, because I can not prove my lineage other then the 5% proven by scientific DNA testing and family stories. I am also a fair artist who occasionally does portraits and paints of Native Americans and stylized dolls in the Kachina style. My doll paintings come from the heart and do not have any real connection to the Kachina society and I make sure that anyone who receives one that they are just that. Ho Ho Ho (part of my other spirit). Maybe we should start a special tribe called the Dena (DNA) tribe with a special clan within it called the Wanabee Clan (for those who are Native American only in the heart) just for those of us who can only prove heritage by DNA and have a special DeNA tribal dance. While I can not prove it with paperwork I am still part Native American at heart. |

I didn't know this forum was here!
Cool! ![]() Soooo... I am a spectator, I confess! Thinking about going over and checking out that Haliwa-Saponi mini powwow this weekend. There is also a Native American Art and Craft exhibit at the Raleigh Fair Grounds. I know I will make that this weekend! |

Is there some source were we who were brouht up without any exposure to native tongues can get a translation or even a simple 'story book' or 'paraphrasing' about what is being sung?
How about a translation book like the common ‘English to French’ and ‘English to German’ books? But mainly I would like to know what the story is that the singers are telling. |

There are litterally thousands of songs being sung by hundreds of drums. And more songs are written every day. Songs are written in a host of different languages while some have no words at all (vocables). It would be impossible to find translations to all of these songs/languages. My best advise to you is if you here a song that you particularly like, during a break in the action offer a small gift of tobacco to the head singer and ask him to explain the song to you. A sincere request is seldom dismissed. You may also try to locate a copy of a recorded interview with Harry Buffalohead (Ponca) that was done by Earl Fenner and Dr. Jon Orens in 1986. On this recording, a drum group sings the songs, Harry resings them much slower and then translates the songs. I was given a CD of this recording but have worn it out (didn't know you could wear out a CD) and cannot locate a source to replace it. Maybe someone on the forumn can tells us where to get one. Good luck and let us know how you make out. Ron |

Thank you Ron S and QuickSilver for your guidance.
Since I had some guidance in where to look, I did an internet search for Harry Buffalohead (Ponca) and found http://www.lib.utulsa.edu/Speccoll/ponca000.htm. This location lists all the tapes etc. that the University of Tulsa has in its library. Now to see about how to get copies <grin>. Thanks again |

song translations
Thank you Ron S and Quicksilver for your input and guidance. Because of your input I was able to lear via internet that at this location
http://www.lib.utulsa.edu/Speccoll/ponca000.htm "The University of Tulsa McFarlin Library, Department of Special Collections has THE JIM STEINER - TONY ISAACS COLLECTION OF SOUND RECORDINGS OF PONCA AND OTHER INDIAN SINGERS Jim Steiner and Tony Isaacs recorded some 50 reels of Ponca and other Indian songs during the 1960's. Isaacs is re-recording them to Record able Compact Discs (CD-Rs), and his notes on this project follow, as does the beginning of a detailed inventory of the songs. As of July 1997, 21 of the 50 reels have been transferred to, coincidentally, 21 CD-Rs. Only the CDs are available for use by readers." Now I will se if I can get copies of the CDs. |
