Question Soldier Dance and Songs

Ok...I'm gonna rely on our abundant sources of knowledge here for this topic.

Is there anyone amongst the PowWows.com family who knows anything about this dance and its origins? If so, what can you share with us?

Ponca's have a dance that honered their soldiers that served in the past wars. other nations also have a dance that honers their own veterens. Ponca's call their dance sodier dance. I believe the other nations call theirs war mothers.

For our family, this is how we honor a returning soldier/warrior.
When a soldier returns home from a war. His family all get together and celebrate in their Indian way. The good news is spread. A feast is planned and prepared. Old warriors or soldiers get their war stories out. A pipe will be smoked for this coming event. Cedar and sage will be used to smoke off the bad spirit of the honored soldier.
Give away items are gathered. Horses, rifles, blankets, shawls and other useful items.
Songs of the clan and societies are brought back out and singers will practice these songs. Chief songs, veteran songs, give away songs, society songs, memorial songs, scalp & victory and war mothers.
As some of you know, we're having a Soldier Dance for my cousin Kay Anquoe Apriesnig on May 31st in Apache and all of you are invited to come out and participate.
Speaking specificaly on War Mothers songs, these come from the Kiowa. My grandpa Jamie "Jimmy A" Aungoue composed many of them. We're doing this the old way so at Kays dance we're encouraging people to bring enemy articles for the Scalp, Victory and War Mothers songs.

Pawnees have "Soldiers Dance" songs and some individuals have their own songs. This is the same as the Kiowas, some soldiers have their own songs and have their Kiowa names in the songs. But anymore, the songs are for all soldiers.

young,

There may be some truth in your theories. Too bad the people who would know are practically all gone now.

I think Red_Stone's dad is a good source to approach for the Kiowa War Mothers songs and where they came from.
