NEW guyz vs OLD headz
Ok...I have come across PLENTY of people that don't go to the dances anymore...because its just NOT THE SAME...Most of the younger guys, well younger as in 20's and under, man they sound good, they sky around...but I'm thinkin the problem is the tempo of the songs...man they turn gourd dance in2 a side step...could that be what people are referring to? But times are changing as they always have and always will..is this a new era of singin...I can understand the tempo being peppy at a powwow especially when a southern drum has to sing after a northern drum....gotta keep the dancers goin can't slow em down...so faster tempos are carried away....but hmmm...Gourd dance...no reason to be that fast..i hear dancers complain...but when your jammin..its hard to slow every other singer down....what you guys think?

It can be hard to maintain a tempo when guys start getting into the song and start speeding up...the beat starts galloping and the horses want to run! That's about when someone, usually not the lead singer, starts making chopping motions trying to get everyone on the same beat he is off on :) Going too fast can ruin a song and seems to be a common problem in my limited experience.

A very good point, about the tempo of Gourd Dance singing and everytime I've been to dances it does seem pretty fast even from the get go. And the skying part will eventually fade out as they get older and like everyone that started at a young age knows your vocals will start to get raspy after awhile singing weekend to weekend and sometimes during the week, too! Sometimes I'll even notice singers will sing a bawl-dah-dawgyah either second or third sessions of singing or even sain-tine-daw too! Sain-tine-daw is for brush dance and they're thinking it's a gourd dance song but how are they going to learn unless either myself or some of the older bros. or cousins or uncles will. But then again you get boys that don't want to listen and just disrespect and sing whatever comes to mind. And be all hi-gyah-hain, and down right MAW-BANE and then I'll take to the side and let you in on a few things.

haw LMAO I know it, thats ma ndn name maw bane shhhhhhh lol That's another good point about the protocol of songs, but I guess the order is lost with the older ones, some younger guys know which songs go when like my dad, but I guess they can't teach EVERYONE...Totally right about them Mustang and Brush dance...Technically Mustang goes at the end...and Brush Dance doesn't even belong with the rest of the Gourd Dance songs. That's a totally different story....

When I started Gourd Dancing there were mainly old guys around that drum Now days they are younger and younger which in itself is good because it means that the next generation has and will continue these songs Having said that it has been noticed depending who is sitting at the drum that there is a tendancy to speed the tempo And man I am here to tell you it does change the nature of the Gourd song and ultimately the dance. I can not speak for Powwows outside of Oklahoma. I am only talking about powwows in the center part of this State... Because it matters greatly who is sitting at that Drum, and who is Head Singer whether or not he will maintain control of the Tempo. As for Skying which is a Northern thing, It dont belong in a Gourd Song... period.
