Anyone have any info they can send me about making a hand drum? I have been given two deer hides and decided to make some hand drums while I have time over the December holidays. I'll be ordering 8-sided frames from Crazy Crow. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Not too many true southern people use the hand drum as a part of their cultures anymore unless they do shows or sing for handgames.

The biggest question when it comes to these hides is if they have been tanned already? Got them stretched?

It is mainly to have for enjoyment for whenever I decide to kick up a song around the house or who knows I may even enter a hand drum contest at a powwow one day. LOL! Also, I've been given the hides and was looking for ways to use them.

I can relate to this.

I collect Native drums. I have one-sided, two-sided, square, round, octagon, big, little and tall drums.

I dusted one hand drum off at the Gathering a while back and as a novelty, entered the hand drum contest. We took third in a big, Northern dominated hand drum contest.

It was fun, but like I said, it was a novelty as southern people don't usually sing round dance songs on hand drums.

One of my friends just scraped and stretched some fresh hides. He just asked me to help him make a drum! I've seen my dad to it so I kind of have an idea of what to do. If and when I make a drum, I will share the details with you.

I remember you've talked about dancing. You could have the hides tanned for leggins possibly...depending on their size, you may need more...
