It often depends on the person(s) who you learn from (or the drum) and what they teach you. Quite often a singer will (or shall I say should) have some experience at the Center Drum. In more modern times, a young one (who may be as old as 50+, but new to the drum) may travel with one or several drum groups for a few years before it is decided that they are comfortable with what they have learned and are to learn. At that time, the individual and whomever "sponsors" them may decide to have an Honoring or some sort of Give-a-way. I've heard and seen people do this at the first pow wow they ever attended...just years later...and I've seen people do this at random dances. The thing to remember is that you never lose your humbleness along the way as it too is a way of paying your way to the drum. Be as observant as you can...learn as much as you can...This includes any and all origins of songs, the meanings and stories behind them if available. Remember that when you make that time to recognize those who have helped you along the way, it is always good to give from the heart. Take your time and prepare for it all along. To put something like this together at the last minute will really show how unappreciative you are/can be. LSS

Only then do we jeopardize the gifts we are given. Its not the final destination that defines us, rather the journey taken! |
