Spoons is an unknown quantity at this point
Well, never sung at a big powwow (or contest at all). Largest powwow I've sung at had five drums, and frankly I found it pretty boring to spend so much time sitting at the drum being ready to sing but not singing.

On the other hand, being the only drum at a powwow is mighty tiring, and leaves a lot of dead time for the MC to fill while we rest our voices. Personally, for singing, I prefer a powwow with two or three drums.

I hear ya' spoons. . .

We've been the only drum for a 3-day powwow and we have also been to a powwow that had 76 drums.

A powwow with 3-to-five drums would be ideal. It would let every drum sing alot and not make the emcee have to "dig too deep."

WhoMe,
I recently moved to OK, and I can say the smaller community dances are larger than some of the BIG CONTEST POWWOWS where I'm from.

Sitting at the center drum at the smaller dances, I get to sing more often and I learn more. Unless there's a center drum at the big contest powwows... singing there you're limited on how many and what songs you sing at the event.

SmokeEater,

There are some good powwows.commers living near you!

As for singing there are at least 4 powwows somewhere in Oklahoma - each weekend - 52 weekends of the year!

Enjoy~!

I like it best when there is only one drum.
That way the spirit builds one song after the other.
When there is more than one drum that spirit may build but,
there is always that one drum that kills it. You know what I mean.
If you don't, then come around here in June.
Then you will know what it is about.

Small non-contest powwows are the best. Everyone that is there is having fun, relaxed and is dancing for a reason beside the mighty dollar.

I like the smaller traditional pow wows, but have been talking about going west so our boys can see what real pow wows are about... LOL.

I like getting the chance to sing more at a pow wow where there are three to four drums, have been the only drum, and sat with a drum during contests out west a few times... sitting there to get maybe two songs a session is kinda boring... but it's cool to be around that many singers and drums.

Just my 49 cents worth...

All right Stroud powwwow.....wooohooo. I love that powwow, but mostly the gourd dancing in the morning and the 49s at nite....everything else is gravy.

CENTER DRUM all the way...head singer chooses who sings wut...well around here they do...then u can take a break and enjoy the rest of the drums sing...i like the semi-big powwows like Tia Pia powwow this year was held at the Fairgrounds in front of the Comanche Complex...shoot it was fun...NEXT>>.stroud...THEN HOMECOMING...now the rumors are circulating as to where its going to be..considering the grounds were flooded out...time will tell...
