Singing Criteria

I need some advice in setting up 5 criteria to judge singers/drum groups on.

I will be using this in a real tabulation form.

Two criteria that I would like to consider are:

1. Quality of the lead
2. Quality of the second

One criteria that is used at a lot of powwows is “cleanliness” of the drum area. In my opinion, I do not think this should count equally as actual singing. I would rather just provide garbage sacks and tell the drums that cleanliness around their drums is strongly encouraged. What do you think?

Are there any criterion that would just apply to southern singing and not apply to nothern singing?

Any comments would be appreciated.

The hard beats / honor beats, whatever you want to call them are another area of difference between northern and southern singers. So this might be an area to focus on. Are they rushed? spaced correctly? Does it sound (and look) good? Is everyone participating?

Also, and I'll probably get banged up on this one, but it's always been my impression that southern singers generally dress a bit nicer than northern singers. I'm not trying to start a war here, but I'd say that northern singers are much more likely to dress very casually, i.e. shorts and tank tops. Maybe I'm wrong on that, but that's generally been what I've seen where I've been. I'm not saying all norther guys dress that way, just saying I'm more likely to see it on a northern drum. So a criteria for appropriate appearance might be included.

shinobn, LITTLE and Hobbs,

Thanks for the feedback.

So far you have added:

1. Drumbeat - syncronized? appropriate? dancible?
2. All singers singing - no milivanilli. same pitch? same timing?
3. Middle beats - sound good. not rushed. spaced correctly.
4. Leads - no changing leads.
5. Crowd enjoyment - makes dancers dance.
6. Dress - appropriateness for southern singing.

All good suggestions!

Keep the ideas coming!

Singing Criteria...continued

Idk...I wanted to add some things....lol

Song originality...Sing your own songs, don't make money off other peoples songs.
Monitoring the dancers is always a good technique. The dancers provide the best feedback, unknowingly...And the millivanili is good...
You can't really judge on the honor beats..because that would depend on the type of song...the style of song... the flow of the song.. that's what you should judge is the flow...and up keep of the song..Is it appropriate? Is it really southern style? Or is it more of a northern style...points points points...and dress...as long as there really isn't bandanas theres really not much else to count off....I mean as long as they are presentable, and there's nothing controversial or anything like that...maybe they shouldn't look like a bum...yea...and hats should be forward but what can you say...

How well they work together as a group. Sometimes a couple of the singers have to carry the whole group.

I look at the hand signals ........ is the lead having to direct everything or does his group know what is going on. Guess this happens more when a goup has to pick up singers to meet the min amount needed to be able to contest.

I look at beginning and end. Is it smooth? Everyone starting and stopping at the same time.

Also type of song and how they carry it off ......... like if it's an old one, word vs all vocables.

And yeah...... hobbs.......... I can agree with what you said about the dress to a certain extent. I haven't seen the northern guys all dress the same way like a uniform. Same color pants..... same shirts and cowboy hats. Could be out there....just haven't seen it.

You also need to take in to account the appropriateness of the song too... the song has to match what they are asked to sing for... if not... that would almost disqualify them in my opinion...

A thousand Wados, Uras and Ahos to everyone who posted. Your input is greatly appreciated. From your posts I have gained some good feedback.

I have decided to go with the following criteria in our drum contest:

1. Lead
2. Second
3. Sound Quality
4. Tempo
5. Appropriateness of Song

All 5 criteria are solid singing attributes that can be easily quanitified on a 1 to 10 scale.

During our orientation with the drum judges, I will suggest the details that you all have provided!

like mato said, i dont just wanna hear one guy or a select few carrying the drum through the highs, the lead singer should sing so that everyone sings, thats a drum contest right, everyone singing?
second everyone should be on the right pitch, but thats kind of a given, not only same pitch but no one should be singing louder than the next, i guess that would be harmony...thats what i espcially look for!!

thats the way i run things....
