It is officially 49 time in Indian Land!
People have asked me where are some of the places I have been to 49's. Well, I decided to make a thread and spill the beans. Though 49's ain't what they used to be, they still take place in many different settings. A 49 is not a 49 without singing 49 songs. I have met many people at 49's and become lifelong friends. Among these 49 sites where I have sang are: The banks of the Missouri River in Bismarck, North Dakota "The Dome" in at Schmitzun and Denver Powwows. "The basement of the Indian House" at Dartmouth University, New Hampshire and Stanford University, California. "Gas Light Park" overlooking the Seattle, Washington skyline. In the dormatories of Tsaile, Arizona In the city park of Plantation, Florida "In front of the State Capitol " in Hartford, Connecticut "Beside the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" in Warsaw, Poland On the beaches of:Rimini, Italy, Barcelona, Spain and Long Beach, California "Inside the dance arena" at Walter's, Colony, Stroud, Red Rock and Carnegie, Oklahoma. "Outside the dance arena" at Crow Agency, Montana, Folsom, Louisiana, Danville, Illinois, Barona, California, Wichita, Kansas and Clarksville, Ohio. "In the Field" at Ft. Washakie, Wyoming, Poplar, Montana and Norman, Oklahoma. "In the hills" of Rocky Boy, Montana, Tomah, Wisconsin and Pawhuska, Oklahoma. "Clubs" in Ignacio, Colorado, Oklahoma, City Oklahoma, Anchorage, Alaska, Washington, D.C., Winnipeg, Manitoba and Lumberton, North Carolina. "Cowboy Watering Holes" in San Bernidino, California and Mobile, Alabama. "Teepees" in Lawrence, Kansas "A' Mountain" in Phoenix, Arizona. "Squaw Peak" Provo, Utah "Traders Village Parking Lot" in Dallas, Texas. "The Point" in Greyhorse, Oklahoma "9 Mile Hill" in Albuquerque, New Mexico At the bottom of the Grand Canyon! And heck, Some places I didn't have a clue where I was at in Omak, Washington and Hinkley, Minnesota! I know I left some out. *L I guess I can safely say where there are powwow Indians, there is the potential to 49? Where have YOU been to 49?

It use to be classic to hit the July 49 circuit back in the day.
1st weekend - Pawnee Homecoming - Southroads or east of powwow grounds, and the infamous Mailbox. 1st weekend - Moonlite Mile or Greg's Corner 2nd weekend - Stroud Pow-wow in and around the arena or other ball fields. 3rd weekend - Mohawk Park - the classic Rock House would be a rockin 4th weekend - Indian Hills - Sooner Road....killer killer crowd, equivalent to the size of today's GON. Some udder goot ones: Indian Fair, Lookout Mountain, The Point, Big D's, Bullpen, Barona, and Walter's of course. Walter's still going strong but pow-wow gets over late. Dang that committee anyways....... |
