What makes a Southern Drum "Hot?"

1. Hitting the North American powwow circuit from coast-to-coast?

2. Placing at every drum contest they enter?

3. Being Host or Invited Drum every weekend?

4. Winning first place at The Gathering and/or Schemitzun where there is top singing competition?

5. Consistantly producing a "jamming" sound everytime they set up?

6. The number of CDs they put out?

7. Winning a GRAMMY or NAMMY award for singing excellence?

8. Coming out with a new or original sound?

9. Being talked about (both good and bad) on the powwow circuit?

10. Young good looking singers?

11. The sun?

What makes any drum hot for me is in the looseness of the hide covering the drum. If it is loose, it makes a good deep bass thumping noise. The microphone picks up that radiating sound and the amp really works well to pump the sound out of the woofers. As a sound person, I like these kinds of drums, rather than the hard heads and tight skins.

Yeah I know. With sound systems, you can get sharp highs and tight bottoms.

what makes a southern drum hot?..........well what makes em sound good is
when they all sing together, and it sounds smooth...
when they're all hittin those highnotes together...
when the sound of their drum just sounds ACE.
and when they show up with a good crew, and jam ALL weekend
