49 vs. Round Dance songs

Due to the recent controversy surrounding the 49 Contest at Schmitzun, I thought I would run this past the readership.
____

Round dance songs (especially those with words) are sung at most 49's.

However there IS a difference between 49 songs with English words vs. round dance songs with English words.

If you are in a 49 contest, knowledgable judges WILL know the difference and score a drum accordingly. (ie "Black Jack Daisy" is a 49 song, "Party Time" is a round dance . . . and so on.,). There are so many 49 songs that you can literally sing a different song all night and not have to repeat the same song.

In 49 country, songs are sung in sets. Sometimes two to three drums will sing at the same time in different areas of the 49. Again in 49 country, 49 songs are not mixed in the set with round dance songs - normally. However, younger singers are beginning to mix these two types of songs, due to their inexperience of not knowing the difference or not knowing a lot of 49 songs.

Round dance songs with English words are normally reserved for the last set in a 49 . . . 'bout when the sun is coming up.

Any comment?

I know that's right.

Not a 49 King huh? That title must have been bestowed upon you by someone else with a few extra powwow points then.

49 songs are 49 songs and round dance songs are round dance songs. Knowledgeable singers know the difference. I don’t think age has anything to do with it. I sing with young guys all the time that definitely know the difference. If you don’t know the difference, I would suggest asking someone that knows or you may find yourself victim to the same controversy.

I agree Joe Fish Dupoint and Larry Cozad make it live at a nine. Millard brings a good chorus crowd with him.

Back in the day I used to 9 around Pawnee with Auk-ah-boo, Frank Adson, Steve Knife Chief, even some fellas from Yellowhammer both the Jim's. then there was a Peewee, dang they use to get it back then.

Last time I went to a 9 not too many followed the format WHOME put out there straight 49 songs, 49 word songs, round dances with words.

I usta wonder about the one round dance song that is used for a Kiowa War Mothers or something. Man them younger fellas back then usta sing it at 49's, kinda of odd.

Just my 2 cents.

records:

Steve KChief and Auk still 49 at "the south roads!"

I agree, times are changing for the worse at '9s. The big ones like Indian Hills, Indian Exposition, IICOT and even Stroud are loosing steam.

Seems like there are a bunch of kids 18 and under anymore "representing."
