What kind of hides do you have on your drum(animals) or what kind do you like to use? Do you like to have paint on your drum? Metal rings or wood? What do you think makes a drum sound good?

My drum is made of a maple frame and the hide is that of a split buffaloe. Its pretty tight and sounds excellent. I don't think it was that bad of a job esp. since it was the first drum I've ever made.

I've seen some real nice sounding drums made out of cow/steer hide out here on the East Coast. And frames have ranged from anything like that of an old barrel to that of flooring and or planks. It all depends on whats available ya know!

Personally, I've found nothing sweeter than that of a buffaloe. I prefer to solid hides that have been done by hand. The split hides, they're pretty good....I have had no complaints out of mine (knock on wood). But the thing is, you never know what you're gonna get with a split hide (i.e. uneveness).
