I've judged a few contest and have actually used in tabulating, the manners of the drum. (no, I'm not the only one, I learned that from other judges) I've seen some just throw trash all around the drum and leave it, be extremely rude, everything. Some judges will dock you for it.

As a singer/drummer I consider it a great disrespect to the concentration of the drummers when you try to come and sit in during the middle of a song. During an intertribal it can be over looked by the H.S. and dancers, but if your drum was requested to sing a specific song say for womens traditional or another catagory then the drum is closed if you aren't there for the first beat. That stands even for drum members. And for people that are thinking about sitting in with a drum ask the head singer prioir to the start of the song say at a break or something if you can sit-in with him, not when he is called on and about to start singing. Stay close to the drum he will signal you when he wants you in. Most drums don't mind anybody who wants to sing just be polite and respectful. Well hope this can possibly help somebody.
