Why is it over the line for him Santos to be making songs? How much ndn do you have to be to make new songs? Is it ok for someone like me, 1/4 ndn to be making new songs? I was always told what isn't in my blood, runs through my heart. Spent lots of years singing and dancing in Ok. So, is it ok for me to make new songs, or is that reserved for full bloods?

exacty. If you can make a song in your own language, then that is yours to make. I agree with rw on that. I like Al and all. He is pretty cool, but the song making issue is kind of touchy. I have a song, a pawnee song, but I am pawnee and it was made by a pawnee. I wouldn't go to comanche for a ponca song, I would go to a ponca. So I guess that is going to be a big issue for another thread.
The best southern singers are okies, hands down. |

I agree with that one person who said stick to the subject at hand.
The question was about who I as a person thought was a good singer.(plus alot of other questions) Everyone has a opinion and mine still say all southern singers sound good. I had the great opportunity to listen to about all of them on c.d's,tapes or at some pow-wow. Alex Santos caught my attention several times just but the way he delivers a song.(and as right now,I still think he sings very well) Now,I think someone who gets second hand information isn't worth listening to. If you can't get the information correct, then I think all you do is blow smoke out of your "z" :Chatter I always find it amusing how these people on here can say this and that. I wonder though,to be so critical about someone you never met and talk about as if you know them. WHO is the better person? I know all the people that are mentioned as good singers wouldn't be caught dead hanging around worrying about what anyone thinks. Call it maturity. You don't see Mr. COZAD posting or Joe Fish or even Mr. Kemble. And these are all people you all admire in some way or another. I feel sorry for this bqueton dude.:( saying he heard this and that.(sound like a gossipy woman):p All I can say is,facts and documention. Get that before you talk bad about someone cuz one day someone is going to think badly of you or say they don't even know you as a singer. (actually I'm racking my brain thinking of who bqueton is):Chatter Guess I'll ask Warren or M.Tahbone she's a queton.:) yikes! I just thought about something. I hope bqueton isn't a stalker! He seems to know a awful lot about what and when and where Alex Santos is.

Best singer!
I can't believe anyone would say anything about another person's nationality without even knowing any facts. You either have to be very young or very ignorant. Cozad, Bad Medicine, Yellowhammer, White Tail, and so many others have never talked out of hatred about this guy, Al. Some members of some groups may not like him, that's human. We can't possibly like everyone! But respected singers I know of, do not come on here and say such stupid things. O.K. maybe making songs for people and such is out of line for some, but bashing his race is down right hatefull. Maybe you should approach this guy and tell him how you feel. As for "blood is thicker than water", "you have to be native". We as indians in the educational field have spent many years trying to educate people and still there are people who seem to think their are natives only in the 50 states. READ! learn, before you speak. Should he sing intertribal songs of plains tribes? I don't know, who am I to say. It is by the way, intertribal. So many tribes in the N.E., S.W. and other parts do it. Anyway, this young man has shown respect to these ways. He does'nt deny who he is. on that note, I worked on a documentary with him and others and I'll have you know that he in fact is enrolled with the Taino Arawak Nation of the Antilles and is part Aztec. He even speaks his native language of Arawak. I strongly doubt any of these young people on here do. You can't even speak Kiowa or Sac-n-Fox or any other indian language FLUENTLY yet you bash someone who does. By the way, if you doubt any of this info, search the net for info on this guy. He was on the dance theater, and served on many powwow committees across the U.S. You do realize that you need credentials to do those things. Anyway, stop hatin. Look for my film coming out soon entitled; Lost Peoples of the Americas.(PBS)

I forgot, my favorites are Larry Cozad and Jimmy Kemble. I like Kelly Kable and Anthony Monnassy too. P.S. That Arawak tribe is On the federal recognition list. Check out there website. They are going through the state of Florida. They have federal recognition through the South American F.U.N.A.I. (the B.I.A. of south america)
