I've even been taught to hoop, by the guys, and the Blackfoot advisor gave me the nickname hoopster, and I proved to be better than some of the guys. I don't mean to do you're culture wrong, just to take part of it. I hoop not to prove anything in woman's rights, not to look cool, but because I love to hoop, I can't explain it, I love to hoop. . .and I love to sing and drum. I don't mean to offend anyone. All I wish to do, is learn

Hoopster
Then don't come down South.. Women DO NOT!!! drum and sit with the men.. or even touch the drumstick....We set in the second row.. we are affectionately called "CHORUS GIRLS".. Girl some of our Ponca, Kiowa women would make you wish they would slap you down. Show some respect.. as my grandfather would say.. If you are going to do something do it right or not at all... and in your case, don't do it at all..

Sorry if this sounds harsh.. But you opened your self up to it.

Ok ....i believe that a woman should not be behind a drum but when i see it, it doesnt bother me. My dad is the head singer of our drum and we occasionally go to powwows with this other drum that has a woman and her daughter sing on it;however it is a family drum. I was taught that a woman can sing on a drum if it is a Family drum or an all woman drum.

rez rocker.... I have no idea where you come from but most ALL tribes (at least in OKLA) have their OWN tribal flag songs. I'm frickn' tired of wannabe drums singing (and *******izing) tribal flag songs. If you don't know what you are singing, maybe you should leave it alone. Haw.

Wink follow your heart

Well girl, it seems that you have stirred up quite a bit for people out west to have heard of what you are trying to do.
First of all, follow whats in your heart.
If whats in your heart says to sings from your gut and your heart then do it. If it tells you that you should lead your life according to other peoples rules are then you now where you stand.
I sing with a Southern Drum group from the Southwest area and Ive sung with different drum groups like yellowjacket, southern medicine, zotigh singers, and suneagle. There is a reason why women cannot sing at a Southern Drum group and so far I don't that any one has written why you can't. So here goes, it is only out of respect for women that they are not allowed to sing. Mainly because as men we have many flaws and respecting women is a hard thing for most men to do. Also because of the earth being our mother and that we give the women a place of honor to stand or sit behind us and sing. This a only part of what I have been taught by some of my elders. DONT WORRY, YOU WILL ALWAYS RUN ACROSS SOMEONE OUT THERE THAT IS NOT GONNA LIKE WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND THEY WILL ALWAYS SAY SOMETHING TO TRY AND BRING YOUR SPIRIT DOWN.
But like I said, follow your heart and do it with the highest respect for the origin and the roots of where the songs come from. As for the flag song, Im sure you have a flag where you are from. The flag song and the songs that you use should be the ones that you compose, then they will be yours. JUST DO IT WITH RESPECT, BECAUSE IF YOU AIN'T GONNA RESPECT THE ROOTS THEN YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT.
Later.
