Shaved feathers

I have seen women smoke dancers with shaved feather bunches in the back of their hair.

Does this have a meaning or a name?

Is this a recent addition to women's smoke dancing?

Hey Dennis, it's Josh. As far as I know, the split feathers on the women are just for that little extra flash. A little more movement for the judges to pick up on. Long ago though, our warriors would sometimes wear feathers like these. It was to show others their status as a warrior.

That hat is adorable, and your little one is growing so fast! Anyway I was wondering how they make the feathers all curly like that.

when they're stripped off the quill they naturally curl. also from extended use they get a little more curly.
