Gustoweh Frames

I am working on making a Gustoweh for my regalia. This is my first one so im not 100 % how to put it all together. I have the frame made of leather. The trouble I am having is this. I have seen alot of the frames wraped with leather or velvet as well as I have seen a few that where covered. I kinda like the wraping method but I am unsure as to how its done. Like when you wrap it where and how do you secure it? Is it a pain to sew your bead work on it afterwards?

Sge-noh! I'm new here, my first post.

No offense, but what the heck you doing in NC? Hanging with the Tuscaroras?

I haven't made a gustoweh but my uncle just finished a beautiful new one and my (female) cousin makes them. I'll ask them and answer you when I know.

I do know that my uncle loomed his beadwork then sewed it around the bottom. It's very beautiful.

Hey No'yeh,

Thanks for the answering.. Yup living in California is a bit far away from Mohawk Territory lol. :)

I have just finished my first Gustoweh...but I want to make a few more till I get it down and work out some bugs. I danced with it this past Sat and it worked great! Got lots of good comments. :) However most folks in CA have never seen a gustoweh in person lol.
That would be great if you could get some tips from them! Even better would be some nice up close pics. Thanks a million!

I've made a few wrapped gasdo:we's in my time for my kids. i usually use ash splint..like they make baskets out of for the frame. measure the fabric-i used velvet at the bottom of the base and then gathered it all at the top. i used a quick running stitch down the side and around the top where the feathers go. the shaved feathers that get sewn on cover it up. i'm not sure if its the "right" way how to make one, but it sure did pass for an awesome gasdo:we'!!!

Sekon

I just finished mine a couple of weeks ago the way i did it was I made the frame out of ash splint and then cut a strip of leather to wrap the brim around with you have to stich it on the top of the brim and cut it about an eighth of an inch short so it wraps tight. then i took what ever fabric i wanted in this case a red one and i folded the edge and stiched it folded part in to the leather on the bottom of the brim half going through the leather and not pulling too hard. then you just have to stich up the back and sinch the top of the fabric around the swivels and cut off the extra. do your beading on a stip of cloth and then sew it on afterwords
