Sge:noh, just to answer your question,
The Delaware Skin Dance is usually done at the end of our social gatherings, it is sometimes also called "Stick Dance"or in Cayuga Language we'd say "Ganewa'eh" meaning "Striking Skin" Two Singers are selected by the man taking charge of the social. He will also select a man to annouce the next dance, during this time, the man in charge of the social will place two sticks on a bench in the middle of the longhouse, or hall, or gym. lol...then after the annoucement of the dance. the two singers will head towards the middle, remove any headgear & pick up a stick and start to sing keepin beat with the sticks by hitting the bench. However i do remember when i was a kid the two men would stand in the middle and hold a thick strap of leather and hit that, making a slapping noise. but however times have changed LOL the two singers will take turns singing solo. starting out slow and then adding in a few fast songs here and there in the set. the dance it's self can last up to an hour! depending on the crowd of dancers. the Men dancing this dance will remove any type of headgear as a to show respect and honor the delaware, as the delaware are said to have held this dance very sacred. i hope this helps you. During the course of the stick dance there is often an unspoken contest of endurance between the dancers and singers. That is why it can last so long. Usually there are tons of people who start out dancing but by the end of the dance there is usually only a small handful left.
