I think we're talking about the same thing. I've heard it referred to as a longhouse dress - that doesn't mean everyone refers to it that way. Is there a traditional women's buckskin the Haudenesaunee wear at powwow? Wrap skirt and cape?

There are various styles of dresses (patterns) - I've noted that since the rise of pow wow smoke dance categories the dresses are more contemporary. I believe that each individual dancer choses to have a regalia that they compete in separate from that they use during ceremonies. I know my son does.

I've seen women wearing them before on occasion, very rare... but dude, when we wear a traditional buckskin, how many of them western indians think we're dressed like the wahoos? LOL!! I dont' think most people would recognize that as an actual native dress thanks to the wahoos. People have even made fun of my mom's pic where she's wearing her buckskin.... and they don't keep in mind that it was taken in the 60's.. sigh.

I don't see many people wearing them like that anymore. In fact most of the time I've seen them is from some reinacting group dressed in "period". OHHH but i did see a pic once of a beautiful onondaga elder wearing one and she looked fantastic! I don't recall her name though.

I think the long fringe buckskin dress and the shorter fringed ones from pre-80's has been more adopted. But I see them with Haudenosaunee beadwork on them and still with the beaded tiara.

Thanks for your post. Maybe it's time to take the traditional buckskin back from the wahoos (but I can't do it - I'm too white, I'd just look like another wahoo).

GOOD MOMMA!
that's what i was told too, you have your "show clothes" and your ceremony ones.
I love my big ol calico "mu mu" style tops... they are so modest and cover up all that frybread Queen shape that i have.. lol.. but i do have some really modern "prom gown" brocade satin style tops also... to each their own!
