Most, if not all of us, have run into situations where we faced stereotypes about Native Americans or incorrect information about Native American culture.
Please describe an experience you had that involved such a stereotype or misinformation and how you handled it. |

I faced stereotypical situations about my skin color and hair length. I would hear "You can tell their an Indian by their skin color and black hair and dark brown skin". Im light skinned and my hair is naturally light brown with blondish-red tint, but thats maybe because I am also Hispanic and French descent. But I never had dark colored hair. Also throughout the years up to now, I have been asked some questions like "Do you people still get married in a sweat lodge?" or "Why do you guys holler and dance around a fire with your tomahawks?". I did answer those questions to the best of my knowledge even though I was young. Im still young but when Im asked stereotypical questions pertaining to Native Americans & Native American culture, I keep my respect for the other person and answer maturely in the best way I can. There is so much people can learn about our people and some want to learn about the different tribes of Native Americans and their ways of life. Which is good, because there are a lot of things that can be taught about our people. So when I faced in some situations of questions being asked or things being said to me about my culture, I use it as a little "Native education" time.

I wear the southern style buckskin & cloth dresses. Since Im part of the Kiowa tribe, the way I dress and what I wear has to do with me being part Kiowa. That includes my leggings and my belt with the 3 belt pouches and silver metal belt drop. A long time ago, Kiowas as well as other plains tribes used the belt pouches for different things. Now they are used mainly for decorations. But originally they were used to carry a knife and pound meat (which is dried, pounded meat...a favorite "snack"). The belt drop is really a long strip of silver or metal that hangs from the belt and was used to whip horses because we were nomads and mainly traveled by horse. Now belt drops are fully beaded and decorated and few women have belt drops that are silver or metal. When I dance at our annual Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society Ceremonials, we where our red and black dresses which is called a battle dress. I enjoy dancing and dressing. Since I was raised by grandparents, I like to see more of the "old school" style of dressing and dancing. I dress and dance because I love it and to represent my tribes and ancestors.

Hello! As a former tribal/pow wow princess myself, I know the obligations it would take to represent your respective tribe or organization. It takes time and some sacrifices to be able to travel to various pow wows and functions.
My question is: Do you have a family support system that will help in your reign as Powwows.com Princess? Also, other than the obligations set forth by the Powwows.com Committee, do you have another particular platform that you will support? Good luck!

And I am willing to support ANY platform that pertains to Native Americans in any way (culture, language, today's lifestyle, etc.)

Great answer, and I wish you the best of luck in the contest. I would say that I hope we can meet some day on the pow wow trail but I do believe we may have crossed each other's paths a time or two.
