Maya Crawford
Eastern Cherokee 24 years old ![]() Osiyo! My name is Maya Naomi Crawford. I'm 24 and I live in Jacksonville, Florida. I'm eastern Cherokee on both sides of my family. I belong to the Deer clan. My family is from New York and Connecticut by way of North Carolina and Virginia. I've been dancing since I was 8 years old and have been going to alot of powwows ever since. As you can see, I'm a jingle dancer. I believe that the dance chose me and I feel really good about dancing this style because alot of healing has come out of it. People have asked me to do a blanket dance for them and they believe in the special prayers danced into the blanket. It has resulted in the person in need of the healing to improve. This makes my fill with joy to know that people believe in my dancing. I'm also a college graduate from the University of North Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Information Sciences. I'm pursuing a career in software development and currently employed with a software company that creates custom software for RV Dealerships. I enjoy the challenge of software programming and the freedom to be able to go to as many powwows as possible. I've traveled to many powwows all over the southeast ,some in the northeast ,out west and I look forward to traveling to many, many more powwows. Wado! I believe that Powwows.com is an awesome site that needs to be represented to its maximum. One thing that I like about the site is that its members are diverse, ranging from descendants reclaiming their heritage to those who are not Native but have a great interest in Native culture. It is a great way for all these people to come together and discuss what is happening in the powwow world and in Native communities all over the continent. I would like to represent that diversity at powwows by becoming princess. Another thing is that I believe that I could get the word out about the website. I travel to alot of powwows and enjoy doing so. If it wasn't for Powwows.com, I would not know of powwows in and around my area. I know that by becoming Powwows.com Princess that this is a great way to give back to the site and all who help run it. http://www.powwows.com/gathering/members/mayche.html

Greetings , I have a question , and I hope it won't offend you.
Looking at your pic , it is obvious that you are a mixed blood and I would like to know how you would respond to those who see skin color as who you are and don't try to see past that ? Also , when speaking to other NDN people has this been an issue ?

No offense taken. This has been an issue since I first started dancing. I 've had non-native and native people tell me that I don't "look" Native and I shouldn't be dancing. When I was younger I used to get real upset and avoid the person(s) if I know they'll be at a certain powwow. But now I don't care. If you can't take the time to get to know a person before you start judging them, then it's not worth me stressing over it. I'm still respectful to anyone who has this viewpoint which makes them look like the bad person. As for other Native people, the majority of them that I've met and spoken to accept me for who I am and not by my skin color. They are the ones who take the time to get to know me and shake my hand after an exhibition or competition dance. I'll never let something like this keep me from dancing.

Thank-you ! That is an excellent viewpoint. I asked , because there are many that judge from afar , and never take the time to meet and understand who a person is or why they are who they are .As my signature line says , I don't believe in blood quantums as a way to prove a person's indian-ness. I was wondering how you would answer and I would say you did well ! Good Luck with your endevour ! Thank-you again...WD

Hello, as you all know I am the 2006-2007 PowWows.com Princess and I know this process isn't easy because some people have some very tough questions that took me a long time to answer. I don't want to get you to answer some real tough ones but here are some that I was asked and would like to see your answer!
1) Why would you like to represent PowWows.com? 2) How to you plan to represent PowWows.com online? 3) How do you plan to spread awareness/represent PowWows.com as the Princess offline? 4) How important is it for native youth to recieve the proper education that they are entitled to, graduate and continure their education upon graduation? 5) With fashion, television/movie industry and hi-tech gadgets how does it affect you? Your tribe? The general powwow world? What do you predict it will do to future generations? Also take your time.. you have lots of time.. no rush! Thanks! Summer

1. Powwows.com is more than just a website for powwow listings and discussions. It serves as a community for those in the powwow world and a teaching guide for those new to Powwows. Its members are very diverse from those who are not native who want to learn about Powwows and other aspects of Native culture, to those who discovering their hidden heritage and want to reclaim it, to those who are Native. The face of Native America is changing due to centuries of intermarriages but the fact remains that only the physical features are changing but not the traditions. I want to represent this diversity as Powwows.com Princess. I want to show that all types of people, not just Natives, are welcome to the site.

2. Starting with this site, I will welcome new members and make them feel comfortable about posting here. I will participate in discussions, whether it be a joke someone posted, a news item, or a question about the next powwow. Outside of this site, I belong to several online messageboards and forums that deal with either powwows or Native issues. I will add Powwows.com banner or a custom signature to my emails and posts to let them know that this site is here and they should check it out. I also have a MySpace page where I can add banners and links.

3. The best way to represent Powwows.com offline is to go to Powwows. I go to as many Powwows as I can across the Southeast and every year I try to go to at least two in another part of the country. I think it's more effective to talk to someone face to face about what you're representing than on the computer. I'd like to try to have a Powwows.com newsletter for people who don't have access to a computer so they can stay informed about what powwows are going on in their area. I also attend alot of cultural events here that celebrate the unique diversity of the world, like the World of Nations celebration and will continue to do so through my reign as Princess.

4. Education is very important to Native youth. All Native youth have the right to attend school and should be ensured that they will reach their full potential. Through their continued education, they will be able to improve their quality of life and give back to their tribal communities in which they live. The access to education can be used to preserve Native traditions rather than replace them. This education will better equip them to be functional in both worlds.

5. With fashion, I believe that fashion may have a slight impact on me, my tribe, and the powwow world. This is obvious by the different types of material, such as chinese brocade or sari fabric and various changes in the style of beadwork, such as higher-than-normal crowns or the the big neckpieces. I personally have a jingle dress made from brocade. I believe future generations will see this as being so common that they will go back to the old ways using the the old time fabrics and materials.
With tv and the movie industry, I don't think it's had any kind of impact on me and I'm not sure about my tribe. But as far as the powwow world, I know that there has been a wave of new Native shows, documentaries, movies and even some cabel channels within the last decade or so. And I've noticed more and more people putting out DVDs of powwows, especially some of the larger powwows like the Gathering of Nations and Schemitzun. This is an excellent way for those who can't make it to experience the powwow as if they were there. I believe future generations would continue down this same road and we will begin to see more Native programs that will reach a broader audience. And with high-tech gadgets, I believe this has the greatest impact of them all on myself, my tribe, and the powwow world. My career based on the ever-changing technological environment. I chose this career path becuase at a young age I knew that we would be heading in this direction of everything becoming high-tech with the advancements made in audio and video playback (ex. CDs and DVDs) and video games systems (ex. PlayStation and Xbox). In this broad field, I'm always learning something new and I never get bored. It is quickly becoming essential for success in today's society. In my nation, the majority of fluent Cherokee speakers are over the age of 50. A device called the "Phraselator" will translate English words into Cherokee and this will help teach the language to new generations. Technology will allow my nation, the powwow world and future generations to access today's opportunities and preserve the traditions of the past.
