Yesenia Hill
Navajo and Ojibway 16 Years old ![]() My name is Yesenia Wingosh Yashie Hill. I am from the Navajo (Dine`) and Ojibway Nations. I am 16 years old and a junior at Portage Central High School in Portage, Michigan. My parents are Calvin and Sheri Hill. My father is Navajo and was born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. My Mother is Ojibway from Sault St. Marie, ONT; she was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. I have been going to pow wows since I could remember. My first pow wow was when I was 3 days old. I have been dancing since I could walk. I started out as Fancy shawl and danced that up until about 8 years ago and then I switched over to Jingle. My mother has taught me how to do Traditional Jingle, which I have been dancing for about almost a year.i feel so honered whn i am at pow wows and i have people from all different nations come and ask me to pray for them and their loved ones, it is such an HONOR. I also sing back up for the southern xtreme singers from cochiti, new mexico. As well as going to pow wows I also do ceremonials for my family. Both my mother and my father have been teaching me about to different ceremonies that we do for certain events. When i graduate from high school i would like to go to Arizonia State University for dental school. As the 2007-2008 Powwows.com Princess I would honor the title, being proud to extend my hand in friendship to all people who want to learn about Native Americans. I would try to educate with the help of the crown, to promote Indian Awareness. I'm proud of who I am and where I come from. I want to let other non-Indians know that we are like them in many ways. I want them to know that we are proud people with rich heritage." http://www.powwows.com/gathering/members/southernx_hunnie08.html

Hello, as you all know I am the 2006-2007 PowWows.com Princess and I know this process isn't easy because some people have some very tough questions that took me a long time to answer. I don't want to get you to answer some real tough ones but here are some that I was asked and would like to see your answer!
1) Why would you like to represent PowWows.com? 2) How to you plan to represent PowWows.com online? 3) How do you plan to spread awareness/represent PowWows.com as the Princess offline? 4) How important is it for native youth to recieve the proper education that they are entitled to, graduate and continure their education upon graduation? 5) With fashion, television/movie industry and hi-tech gadgets how does it affect you? Your tribe? The general powwow world? What do you predict it will do to future generations? Also take your time.. you have lots of time.. no rush! Thanks! Summer

Best Wishes and Good Luck to you!!
I have three questions to pose to you, and since we all know that you communicate very well through written word, I'd like to ask that you give a very thorough answer, please! 1. What do you think is the most important aspect of an intertribal powwow, anywhere on this continent, when it comes to reaching out and pulling in the Native American youth, back to their culture? (i.e. dancing, singing, tribal regalia, humor, languages,..etc) 2. In your opinion, and from your own experience IN YOUR OWN FAMILY AND TRIBE, what is the greatest, most important, contribution that women have given to your people, and how has that helped create the young woman, and potentially future leader, that you are today? 3. What can you say, in this very moment, to young Native American women reading this right now, to encourage and motivate them, as they seek their own places in their tribes? I have every confidence that you are going to be able to answer these three questions, which, by the way, were formulated from ideas from 30 other powwow.com'ers and myself. We all look forward to hearing from you soon, and again, good look and best wishes to you and your family! |

Question 1 Camaraderie, I feel is the most enriching way to reach out to Native Youth. Friends in the Native lifestyle are next after family when looking at importance. When I know that I am going to a Pow Wow my excitement is the anticipation of seeing my friends and the realization of knowing that after that weekend I will have more friends throughout the US and Canada. Of course the dancing, singing and HUMOR is great as well. Without friends you have no way of showing the rich heritage that we all share. Question 2 Women are the strength of our people. Our mother’s, aunts, and sisters have gone through many struggles as single moms, abused woman, and so many other traumas of the world. In my family I have seen all types of treatment that is demeaning to woman. My mother has taught my sisters and me that anything that a man can do so can we. She has taught me to change the outcome of any situation with a positive reaction to anything negative. My grandmother shows me that the family is held together through tradition, culture and love. I generally see Native woman holding on to life with nothing but hope and the sense of pride through their children which is a mothers’ greatest accomplishment. Our family jokes about my mother being able to feed twenty Indians with a pound of meat, potatoes and frybread, and the realization is that she has done it. When I ask how she is able to handle stresses in life she simply answers …”I do what I can with what I have and the best always comes out.”Anywhere we go in Indian country we will see woman doing extraordinary things that never are acknowledged. They do it because they have no other way to get things done.To those moms aunts and sisters….I say Chi Migwetch Question 3 Education is not for the privileged few. We as Native Women need to make our mark in Anglo Society. The strength that our mothers have given to us should be used to better not only our immediate families but it should also empower our nations

Question 1 As a member of the Powwows.com web I would like to be able to show and give hope and strength to those natives that are feeling repressed or depressed. I want Natives to be able to see that we are a strong and powerful people and that through them we have a glimpse of greatness. I feel that my confidence and humor can bring that sense of empowerment back to our people, and using the titile to accomplich that is great because the website brings many nations together. Question 2 i have been an active meber of powwows.com since October 2004. i would represnt powwows.com online by welcoming new members as the join and inviting Natives and Non-Natives to the site to become friends and learn about each other. Question 3 I attend many functions in Indian country as well as in the Anglo society. Through Presentations, community events and Non Profit Fund-raisers Powowows.com will be represented in a professional and confident manner. Question 4 Our people have the opportunities for greatness in the private sector as well as in the public scene. Without education we as a people will continue to be discriminated against. We are the minority to the minority. When reports are given on dmoe graphics of a certain area we as Natives are ignored. We must use education and politcal venues to be heard and that requries education. In Michigan we have the Indain Tuition Waiver, Pell Grant and now in my area where I live they have the Kalamazoo Promise. All these are avenues to free education. We as Natives need to use them and excel in the Anglo Society Question 5 Since this a multiple part question I will address each indivual question. Fashion Entertainment and Hi-tech gadgets do effect everyone including myself. If the Hi-tech gadgets did not affect me I would not have this title to run for. The World Wide Web is a both benefit and a disadvantage, like any other materialistic thing in this world we can become obsessed with. Fashion is a big part of every teen’s life. I like to have the name brand clothes, but through my mother, I have learned that there is more that just the price tag on clothing. We go to the the local homeless mission and I see girls my age that do not worry about the price tag or the name brand on the jeans, they just are glad to have Jeans. With my tribe Television and High Tech gadgets are having an impact on their way of life. Sometimes we joke about people being ‘Johns’ but that is a thing of the past most people on the Reservations have high speed Internet, iPods and Name brand clothing. These do take away from the traditional lifestyles that we have. Ceremony announcements are sent via e-mail instead of word of mouth. Sometimes we need to get back to the simple way of life. Every year my family returns to the Navajo reservation for a month and we have no High tech gadgets, no ipods or even the World Wide Web. This is a time for us to get back to who we are. We live simple, we butcher, ride horses, go to ceremonies, and visit family and friends. And Lastly, what do I see how this will impact future generations. The world outside of Native Country has always effected who we are. When the settler’s came our grandfathers and grandmothers knew that their lives would be affected. For us to think that we won’t be affected is ridiculous, we already are. We are a people that have learned to adapt to change. And will do just that, adapt. I would say that remaining true to our customs and traditions through ceremonies and such is a definite must. We must learn all we can from our grandmothers and grandfathers, because one day we will be the elders and we need to be able to teach our future about our past.

I am so, so proud of you! Your answers here have shown a maturity and beauty of soul and character, and I think that your family is extremely lucky to have such an eloquent, intelligent young woman like you going out on their behalf! I knew that you would have great answers, but you have blown me away, and I am so impressed by you! Regardless of the outcome of this contest, you have proven yourself to be an incredible role model, and leader, amongst our women, and I am proud to be able to point you out to my own daughter and my nieces. Way to go, girl!! Can't wait to see you take on and rule this world we Native people live in!

sorry that it has taken me so long to respond but i have been busy with school and trying to keep grades up before i have to take my mid terms...... my answer to your question is that yes i do bead and sew. i started beading by myself at the age of 14 and started sewing by myself also since the age of 14. i would let them know how long i have been sewing and that i am still a learner myself. i would try the best that i could to help them learn the ways that i have been taught by my mom and my aunties. i will let them know that they might not be as good in the begginig but good things take time, and time takes patience. if they came to me to help them get started on beadwork or to help them sew, i would help them the best that i know how.

Southernx hunnie08....
Those are great answers, and you seem like a very intelligent young lady, with a lot of class. I have a question if you don't mind: These days....most communities are being badly hurt by drugs, lack of education/job opportunities, as well as child bearing way too early...then repeating the cycle.... although princesses sure can't control that...I feel it is always important that they 'set the tone' as an example of a positive role model for (hopefully) others to aspire to. What are your feelings about this? |

dealing with education and job opportunities it is what you make it.in my home my parents stress the fact that education is more important and everything else falls to the wayside.without education are people can't prospure.my parents give me everything i can possibly need and i know without education my kids won't have everything that i would want to give them.
