I went to three sessions over the weekend and did not see a single contest song. Friday night didn't end until around 1am. That was after a one hour delay in the Grand Entry. I went to the Saturday evening session and around 10pm, I left still without seeing a contest song. I was told that a few drums started leaving around 2am, just before they got to the adult categories! That ran until around 4am this morning. After a Grand Entry that actually started on time this afternoon, they are beginning to contest the senior categories. That is after three and a half hours of specials. I got bored and left an hour ago. The MC's were extremely weak on keeping the powwow flowing and filling in dead-air time. Too many specials that were poorly organized. I told one of the singers to "watch out, when this imaginary powwow finally ends, they may pay you with Monopoly money". I feel bad for the singers and dancers who travelled a distance for this powwow and wish them safe travels. In my time on the trail, I've hit powwows in WA, ID, OR, MT, MN, MA, VA, CT, RI, NY and can confidently say that Cusick just fell off of my map.

As you can see...

Certainly pw committees go thru phases of lack of support from their community. I've seen this pw ran alot smoother in years past; for a long time it has been a family event, with the inclusion of big prize money only a few years ago.
I dunno D, there was contests every session; however, the teens and jr/sr adults didn't start until about 11:30 Sat. nite. Alot of specials and honorings that may have been coordinated a little better; that's just how it goes. Everything wrapped up about 1:30 a.m. Sat. nite for dancing. I dunno about $$ thing either, shoot, Adults got $1,200, $800, $600, $400 and the drums got $8,000, $6,0000, $4,000, $2000, $1,000! *L Cold hard cash homie! U.S. currency and e'rything. ![]() Leo Charlie took the One Man Hand drum, and White Hawk accompanied by Empero Corral took the # Man (well, person) Hand drum. GE's went half hour late on Fri, and 1 hour late on Sat afternoon; MC's were some ol' timerz but they are all relatives of the Kalispels, Tony & Alec Q., so they help out as best they can.
