Killen, Texas

Okay, I went to this pow wow this weekend and was a little surprised at some of the things I saw, but overall it was a pretty good little pow wow. I have been here before, but it was a different committee I guess. I never heard of the M.C. but he kept calling us "his dancers", example" Would my cloth dancers please enter the arena". LOL
The A.D. was totally strange, he was a nice enough person, but for the job of A.D., he did not have clue as to the happenings of what goes on in the arena. During grand entry he would greet all the dancers(which is nice, several A.D.'s do the same) and then he would hold his hand up over you to let the tabulator know it was okay to take your number???????
Also, he and the tabulator judged the men's/boys' contests. They only used 3 judges, the same three all weekend unless there were relatives dancing. (The same meaning the same women judges judged the women's categories, and the also the same men judged the men's categories). There were not very many people, but there were some circuit pow wow people there.
The host northern drum was from Ohio, McKenzie River, and they sang really well, but they did not look to be indian. They had beautiful outfits on, nice plumes, spinners, bustles, all authentic regalia. There was two traditional dancers, one chicken, two fancy shawl girls(who sang AT the drum, not behind), one jingle, one grass. They sang the appropriate songs, so there is no gripe there. One looked like robert redford back in the day, sunglasses and all. LOL
The southern drum was pretty good and Eagle Point was the other drum and they sang really well(mixed up the songs for the categories, like duck and dive, side step, round dance...they did a really good job).
They did not let the crowd take pictures of the gourd dance, but let them come up and take your picture during the regular pow wow...go figure on that one.LOL
The facilities were excellent, indoor, air conditioned, the hospitality was good.
I think the new committee should get a new head staff, especially an arena director who does not judge the contest, touch the dancers( and I mean without permission, LOL) and knows the arena protocol.
The tabulator person was really nice, he would only do what he was told by the A.D., so that goes back to changing your A.D.
The committee was nice, I didn't see them until the winners were called, but they seemed really nice. They had some categories that weren't filled so that added an extra place to the categories that were full so there were 5 places in those categories. This could be a really big pow wow, it has all the components, I think the committee just needs to ask for more input from the pow wow community. This pow wow is always in september, it's only two days and they have gourd dance, social dances, they had the Aztec dancers which was nice, two step, etc. plus competition dancing.
Winners, what I can remember:
cloth
1st Charlotte McCurtain
2nd me
3rd Keisha Sylestine
4th Felicia LittleCreek
5th ??

Buckskin:
1st Keri Myers
2nd JoAnne Harris

Jingle:
1st Joanne Butler
2nd Tia Nevaquaya
3rd ????
4th???
5th??

Fancy:

Golden Age:

1st Larry McCurtain
don't remember the rest

Fancy:
1st Tyler Abbey * I think
2nd ???Abbey

Traditional
2nd John Butler

Grass: Don't remember, I didn't know any of them

Jr's and teens there were only 1 or two in each category, my two little ones both won. Tiny tots were honored each day.
That was really awesome.
