Mother's Day Pow wow, Canton Ga

I went to the this Pow wow yesterday. Let me tell you, next year I'll have to be more prepared. This is the first time I've went to the Mother's Day Festival in Canton Ga and I really had a bad time. The Drums was good "Buffalo Horse" and I liked Avirl Bird.. I bought both C D's, one of each. Cherokee Rose and Selena was there. For some reason Cherokee Rose looked like a fake to me.. I really don't know anything about her. The dancers was good, I took all the pictures of them that I could. If you did not bring your on table and chairs there was no where to sit and eat, only on a bale of hay... How uncomfortable that was! Lawrenceville is better to me than the Canton one. I'll be going to Lawrenceville, where I know they have chairs and table to eat when you buy food! The sun really wore me out, and sitting on the bale of hay for 4 hours in the sun drained me so bad, and oh, my aching back! I bought some sage that I needed and left early..... Thats my report on this!!!!

I have been trying to find out about this dance for a month. Can you tell me if there were any tipis there? and how many?
What were the ground like and the bathrooms?

They had about 6 tipis...more or less... the bathrooms was those port a toilets. I'm guessing they had at least 10 lined up.. and one behind the stage. My thing is that "Why were there not any tables and chairs so you can eat when you paid for food?"... That was sooooo very uncomfortable!

Hi:
I went to the Mothers Day powwow in Augusta, Georgia and had a very good time. There were some extra things going on during the breaks in the Gourd Dance that I had no clue about, so that was very interesting. It was a very small pow wow, but all the people were very nice and I had a great time. Got royally burned during the Gourd Dance and the afternoon intertribal (I always do, even through my sun block) but it was worth it. I got to spend time with good friends that I only see at pow wows.

Red face

little Wolf, when you have complaints about a dance..and want change...you need to address those to the committee so that they can be made aware that some changes need to be made.

Also, thanks for the information on the tipis and bathrooms, that lets me know for future use in tipi information I am gathering. It also lets me know to bring my own chair for future comfort.

Talking

Sheila, glad you had a good time at the dance. It maybe small, but it is friendly as you pointed out. Sorry for the sunburn...you can use an unbrella if you skin is sensitive. I know I do...and it is acceptable. Sun screen does not seem to work for me.
They have a very knowledgable committee that puts on this dance. It has been going on for many years...and is a good dance to learn.

Cool Mother's Day Pow wows: Lumbee was PRO!

Hey, I've been to Canton, and I did not like it. The speakers were tooo loud, especially when certain individuals were singing (not drums). Too many rules for the vendors. Not fun to be a dancer. I was frowning most of the time.

Went to Lumbee for the first time and LOVED it! We were treated in the most friendly way, and the committee, when they saw that we did not have shade for our drum, cause the canopy was already full, they went and got us one!

Yea, you need to bring your own chair wherever you go. Lumbee had picnic tables near the food vendors, tho, too.

Great fun contests: hand drum, specials in grass, traditional, fancy, regular contests, drum, and country sayins (can't remember what they called it). Lots of fun!

Lumbee pow wow was PRO! (PRO drums, PRO dancers, PRO MC, PRO committee. The MC and the committee PROfessionally worked together to do it right!)
I sure hope I get to go next year!

Canton Ga.

We were at Canton to and I was very surprised at how it was done this year. The last time we attended was 2 years ago and there were tables near the food ventors, many of them with coverings to shade you, the music wasn't as loud and there was plenty of water for pow wow visitors. This year there was none of that it seemed. There were less booths this year too than 2 years ago.
Of course this year it was very hot and the pow wow area was directly in the sun, so many experienced heat problems. The ambulance left several times taking people to the hospital. Normally this is a good pow wow, hopefully next year it will be as it has been in the past.
