I heard rumors of an invitational champion of champions pow wow to be held in Iowa. The top ten of each category are invited to compete....does anybody know of this pow wow?

that rumor was going around facebook last week. It seems to have started several years ago when a prominent dancer got the idea of doing this, and having different tribes and/or casinos sponsor each category for monster money in each. To clean out the riff raff there was to be some sort of system to make one eligible, like you had to have placed at a big-name powwow or won one. It has been thrown around and talked about for the last couple of summers, usually talked about for jan or feb, usually in the chicago area. I've stood in the background and listened to some of the conversations at a couple of powwows, so there is some life to this, but who knows if it will ever happen.

Well, evidently it is happening because two of my nephews received invites, and they said to check out a website "champion of champions" but i didnt see anything on it. lol...figured somebody on pow wows.com would have the info.

I think we're talking about this, which is planned for memorial day weekend in Sioux city Iowa. The people doing the invites (or at least there lists on the website) have no clue how old people are, some "sr adults" are jrs and some "jr adults" are seniors. seriously, whose going to go to this. its seven clans weekend up here, they have amazing singing groups, great dancing, this isn't going to fly.

Well, i checked it out and i thought it was going to be something different? Kind of hoping it was like the top ten at Schemitzen or something. Some of the dancers listed in the top spots, I havent seen dance anywhere but in that area...most of them were top contenders in each category. Age group splits are good though. Sounds good.

I didn;t see any prize money, and there didn;t seem to be a singing contest. We'll be up at Seven Clans, great powwow, always good to see everyone at that first big dance of the year. we'll see as it goes, what if enough people don;t rsvp?

I wouldn't mind going to this powwow but have to AD in Thief River Falls, I know for a fact that some of the people on that list is going to TRF, too bad they wouldn't select different dates because of all the powwows going on already that weekend, if they really wanted all champions to come to this powwow, their going to have to comply with other powwows, try picking a weekend where there is nothing going on, like mid-may, only a suggestion. lol

For women's southern traditional the list should include both buckskin and cloth? yikes tough!

like I said earlier, they clearly don't know some peoples ages, they have them in the wrong age groups, which makes me think that they are not too clear about anyone other than those they know (those people in their area or those who they have heard of). you can see almost entire categories are blank, so much for an invite-only powwow if you have no one to invite.

I'll say it again, its up against other better-known, better liked powwows. Why go to this one if you have a better one that you like better at the same time?

Bring those people on here, we'd straighten them out.

Lmao i seen the list on the southern straight and i didn't make the cut and i beat everyone of them guyz on it. Some of the invites don't dance anymore lmao

Sounds too good to be true.....

Haven't we all heard of pow-wows like this in the past? Haven't some of us been victimized by pow-wows set up in this manner before??

Let's not forget about a pow-wow not too long ago. It was set up just south of Mpls at a place called "Murphys Landing". Long story short, end of the pow-wow came and there was no money for anyone. The drama unfolded and suddenly the local PD was there to keep the peace if needed. Like all the Natives were going to "go Native" so to speak. The coordinator was put in a squad and taken to jail in order to "protect them".

People left with nothing. It turned out one of the local residents did end up giving out some funds the following Monday or Tuesday, which was very, very cool on their part. I heard rumors of beadwork and items of this nature being sold for people to get home.

I was there because the crew I was singing with at the time was invited. Don't worry we all made it home to our family's and jobs just fine.

Think about it, a pow-wow of this nature would have to be planned at least a year or two ahead of time. Mainly due the the fact the most tribes only award requests like this one time every 'budget year' and some will only award if an enrolled tribal member is requesting the funds. So now what, have a rep from every tribe somehow involved in the pow-wow? Planning something like this would be a huge undertaking that's for sure.....

I guess it can be done, but who is going to put in the time to do it?

Let's call it a 'rumor' that has the Moccasin Telegraph on fire. Good for conversation and a good laugh. That's about it...

couple of issues that have been brought up by others that are impt:

1) who gets invited? is it a local powwow, a regional powwow, or a super world-wide powwow?
-there are people on that list who would def be invited to an invitation only powwow, then there are others who might not. there were entire categories with no people listed. There were people not on the list who should be. Some regions of the country were not represented by any dancers.

2) singing. Supposedly the best dancers are going to be there, but there is no singing contest. All the good singing groups up my way will be at 7 clans (big money, 2 singing contests). whose singing?

3) money. no money mentioned. Hey, let's invite all these divas (remember them people) and we'll give them McDonalds coupons for placing. Yeah right, Diva's need the $$$$$$$, so no $$$$$$$, no Diva's.

4) time. No time to properly put this together as well as picking a really bad weekend. Like I said, up my way everyone going to 7 clans. its closer and better than this thing.

5) I know its invite only, and I know people have gotten invites. But what is the committee going to do when no one, or hardly anyone commits to going? In early May are they going to change it to a regular powwow and have it so anyone can come?

they have actually updated their "invite lists", and actually have most people inthe correct age groups now, before is was a mess, maybe someone from their committee has been reading our comments.

I think something like this would be very hard to organize and plan. And you can't have a pw like with and not have drums! Scary!

it's all good bro, I wasn't invited to this one either, I don't like the idea of just inviting certain dancers, it kinda defeats the purpose of a powwow, the whole reason for communities to have powwows is to invite EVERYONE! So is everyone going to get paid that is invited? Also to have elite dancers compete dancing to lame drum groups is kind of a slap in the face to these dancers, at least have one good drum group to dance to...lol...I have a friend from that area and they said they only have 500-300-100 for all catagories....good luck on people showing for that.

I'll for sure be in Thief River.

Maybe this committee can see if they can put on a few specials up there instead. This is where quite a few drums groups will be kicking it out anyway.

And, a lot of good dancers will be there ready and willing to compete.
