Who by the way also won the drum contest! And it's no wonder about that....considering that whoever was controlling the sound system only cranked the volume up to MAXIMUM every time they sang. And if they don't think nobody noticed.................! And by the way, there were 'judges' sitting up in the audience around the arena who were judging the drums on how loud they sounded! Hmmmmm...... But don't get me wrong, Young Bird sounded good, but how obvious can you get???????

![]() I claim to be neutral on this matter. Were all the mikes the same brand and condition? Any other equipment factors? Midnight Express sounded pretty loud, also. Yeah, the mixer board seemed unattended a bit...I sat above it for a while...White Tail could be heard from other side...I dunno... I did see them bring a fresh microphone out to the drum on northwest corner (name ?), so somebody was actively working the sound issues.

well im the one who did the sound there and my name is dale roberts.. now for the people who are whinning why don't you post your name on here, or are you just going to ***** behind the keyboard! i keep the sound level the same for everyone and it's not my fault that some drums are louder the other drums.. wayne ran the drum contest and during one judging round he ask me to use one mic and drop the level to half and keep it that same level for the judges to prove who was louder. and worm came over to ask what was happening with the sound levels during that round, and told him what wayne had requested, and he understood..as for leaving the mixing board alone someone was always there, we was in the back and i dont know how you can see back there, cause it was dark were i was sitting at.. now for the fresh mic.. i hope you are not that dumb, and realize the batteries do need to be changed...duh, if you have a problem about the sound why don't you be a man and come and see me, next time... i do sound for lots of powwows all over and i have no complaints... that makes me wonder if you are a real powwow person or a local who stay local... i know i sound upset right now, and i'm so sorry if i come across bold... i try to be fair with everyone but if you do have a problem i wish you would come and see me about it and not hide behind a computer and jump my case. next time come and see me... so we can resolve this in person.....

Like Sneek a Peek posted, not all the drum groups sound the same, some are extremely louder than others. That's one reason why you have to be fair to all and use the same model mics. Certainly, batteries will wear out time to time and they do have to be replaced, sometimes you do have to swap out mics if you're short on time. |

My comment about the mixer does seem harsh, going back over it, but I meant that nobody was cranking it up during certain songs. I was in the bleachers right above. These are just my observations, taking no sides. I had a great time getting to hear 8 different drums at one event, no matter what sound levels. Too bad it has to be a competition.... peace out, AK

Reading about the sound got me to thinking.
I wasn't at Indio but rather Hamilton. I was asked to judge singing one session. While I was judging, standing right next to the drums, I could definately tell who was singing well. It was pretty clear to me. When I was on the dance floor or in the stands it seemed that all the drums sounded more even. It was harder to tell who was singing really well and who wasn't. It was almost like the PA system levelled the playing field. Bringing down the really good singers and bringing up the less good singers. Reminded me of some other pow wows where the PA system has made all the drums sound horrible. So as far as judging goes, I don't think the PA makes a hill of beans of difference. The judges are standing right next to the drums and can really pick up on who is singing well. I don't think singers should fret about how the PA might affect the judges, because in my experience it doesn't. The PA does affect how the dancers and spectators hear things though, and that can take away from the enjoyment of hearing good singers. Sound is a tough thing to manage at a pow wow and for those professionals out there that know what they are doing I always appreciate it. For those "got my speakers and system from the pawnshop to try and make some extra cash" guys, I ask committee's to not hire them. They suffer us all. |

Yeah, well everybody has their own opinions about what was going on.
So tell me what happened with the ladies southern buckskin? There was only 1 that apparently knew the difference between a straight song and a round dance song! And she ended up in 5th place???????????????? She should've been the automatic winner in my book, regardless of points! Those others should've gotten 0 points on that one! They all danced round dance, to a war dance song, almost thru the WHOLE song! Did anybody notice their looks of............HUH....isn't this a round dance???????? Even the judges weren't quite sure what to do! That has me baffled!!!!

Awww, the sounds of a good competition powwow . . . discontent. Oh well, Congrat's to Youngbird, MNX, The Boyz, and my nischasak from Onion Lake, Sask Pipestone Creek. Sounds to me like there could have been nothing better than superb singing all the way around. The sound guys, all of yous do a great job! Keep it up and thanks. I know what it's like from back in the day when groups had to haul around their own P.A.'s. Congrat's to all the winners!

If its not the PA sound system guy,its the drum group whos not singing loud enough, not enough heart in their singing, tsk tsk tsk.
Dale Roberts been a PA guy for decades, across NDN country. The states and Canada. I remember him carrying those huge old skool equipment around. With a big ol smile on his face and his long braids LOL. Your doin a great job Dale, shake off the negativity. |
