manito ahbee 2009 "What went wrong?" Bookmark and Share

I attended MA 2009 this weekend and must say what a disappointment that pow wow has become. To start, they advertised a $12 admission and it turned out to be $15.25 per day admission. They get dancers to be part of the Friday night music award show and they get 100 points to do that. Question: What does that have to do with the contest? NOT FAIR to people who travel to pow wow and dance their hearts out but they are already 100 points behind. Pow wow was totally boring this year... nothing special to it. However, they had Johnathon Windy Boy there as head singing judge, yet he and Haystack haven't been in territory for years but they didn't even get him to say a word or take a few minutes as MC... he is a great MC but not once did they acknowledge that. At the end of the pow wow, there was a rumour that they screwed up on the tabulating... open books??? Anyone want to check that out? And the final slap: Johnathon Windy Boy got screwed on pay. He had to rearrange travel arrangements and it cost them an additional $1,000, so the pow wow committee decided to take it out of his honorarium. How rude to treat a pow wow legend in this disrespectful manner. Manito ahbee should be ashamed of themselves! Any comments?

no ones gonna touch this one?

my 2cents, if Windy Boy was hired to be the singing judge, then that's his job for that powwow. It would be disrespectful to the two mc to suddenly have the singing judge start mcing. UNLESS of course, they (the mc's) asked him to come up for a specific purpose, like talking about grass dancing. Otherwise, he was hired to do a job and he did it.

I can't tell if you are the president of the JWB fan club, you said "he is a great MC but not once did they acknowledge that" and he felt he was wronged with the money, but then you complain about him being head singing judge because, as you say, "yet he and Haystack haven't been in territory for years".

DAncing for 100 points on friday? Lots of places have that kinda thing, maybe its a parade, or a show, not unheard of. If you thought you were going to place, you prob have been to other powwows that do stuff like this and you should have known. If you didn't know about stuff like this, you prob weren't going to place.

You're mad about this powwow, is it because you got the gate, or that you had to pay an extra $6.50?

yes that was the advertised prize but as with any event held at a large venue such as the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, there are other charges like GST and PST as well as other fees that the event centre will add on to the price. if ya don't like it .... i gotta to tell ya ... don't buy any tickets from ticketmaster for a concert LOL

yea like iowa boy mentioned ... he was to be the HEAD DRUM JUDGE .... NOT mc ... and besides it probably would have held up the actual DRUM CONTEST if he decided to slack off on the job he was hired for to mc LOL

and by the way .... C&T Tabulating rocks and have the highest level of professionalism. and if you actually knew this couple, they often post all the event's points on their facebook profile(s) or on the event's facebook page. they are very sought after due to their ability to be totally honest with their tabulations.

I agree.
However, powwows should stick with the advertised admission fees and if they are requiring additional performances they should let the people know in advance. If the performance are going to occur prior to the start of the powwow they should have it on there flyer. If performances are happening during the powwow they should repeatedly announce it during the powwow and have it in their contest rules.

Despite all the powwow drama that can happen at any powwow one can still have a good time - just enjoy yourself!

this pow wow has ALWAYS advertised the fact that there are so called "extra" points if you chose to participate in the opening of the awards show on APTN on their website and posters.

it's up to the participates of the pow wow if they want to attend and get these so-called "extra" points.

and i'm pretty sure L Meechance mentioned it when she was asked to speak at FSIN pow wow in the weeks prior to this pow wow. i wasn't really paying attention LOL

but yea ... if ya wanna be competitive ... show up and get all the points you can

and on their posters ... they do mention ... tickets available on ticketmaster ... total dead giveaway that you will have to fork over a bit more money.

if you can't afford to attend an event .... maybe stay home?

MTS Centre is the one that sets the ticket prices, not the pow-wow committee.

I did have a good time at this pow wow with the dancing and singing and visiting and evenings at clubs... always do! Maybe I expected too much from MA 2009... but that pow wow started out by saying they wanted to be known as the "schemitzun of the north" in their PR campaigns... they don't even come close. It's just an indoor pow wow which offers nothing special. I live here and am sick and tired of defending this pow wow to visitors and freinds. I hear all kinds of comments from lots of people and I finally chose to speak out after 4 years!

BTW, I would be proud to call myself president of the JWB fanclub! There is such a thing as recognizing people for their contribution to the PW community and asking for a few words from JWB to the people in this territory would have simply been a sign of respect. He was a champion dancer on the prairie pw trail for many decades and Haystack is one of the best traditional drums around...maybe you didn't notice the line-ups of people wanting to say hi, shake his hand and have a few words with him.. but a lot of people did!

Also, not one mention of Curtis Assiniboine... our brother from Long Plain, MB who left us in August 2008 and was one of pow wow country's great singers, a really good MC, and a role model. He is Lisa's cousin and forgive me for being cynical but there seemed to be a total lack of recognition for his contribution to the pow wow world at MA2009. I guess I'm old school, but there used to be a lot more respect for pow wow legends shown at pow wows.

I was able to afford the admission but a lot of families couldn't. The $6.50 extra for a family comes to a lot of $$.

Yes, but what does that have to do with the dance contest??? To get that 100 pts, dancers have to come in on friday, pay extra night at hotel, fork out for meals for another day... I'm just saying that dancing in the show on friday and getting 100 points for that puts all the others at a great disadvantage.

That's right! Ticketmaster tacks on a few extra bucks for their fees! It was worth attending! Good times, great people!

Anytime you have an event in one of the centers like that, it will cost you more money than you bargained for. I agree, the pow wow dancers should only have to get points from the pow wow and not come in the night before but its their show so you gota be a "dancin chicken" (quote from Pure Country lol)
As for Jonathon, he is a very highly respected person as a legislator, spiritual leader, traditional person and a pow wow person. However, just because he is on staff doesnt mean he should be expected to speak at every event. He is knowledgeable of song and dance when it comes to the arena, or the ceremonial circles....he is a big dawg and can be a singing, dancing judge, an mc or arena director...nobody is contesting his abilities. It is sad however that the committee did not arrange his travel accordingly. Very unprofessional on their part. . . They were paying him to do a job, which should include his travel at their expense, not his. . . knowing jonathon, i am sure he laughed it off and just chalked it up to experience. lol.....
