2009 Austin Powwow Bookmark and Share

Who all else went to the powwow in Sunset Valley this past Saturday? I was only there for a few hours so I wasn't able to see as much dancing as I would have liked. I enjoyed the dancing, saw some kick-a** regalia, checked out some of the vendors. Overall, it was pretty good.

One complaint - I had the absolute worst frybread and Navajo taco that I have ever put in my mouth! I don't remember the name of the vendor, but I'll remember the logo - and never eat there again! It was like they forgot all their spices, and then rinsed all the juice off of the beans so that everything had about as much taste as cardboard.

Other than that, had a great time!

It was okay....I have a few complaints, not really complaints but more or less concerns about this pow wow:
first of all, the speakers for the morning session (which is to be educational for the schools) didnt know beans about any of the regalias, dances, etc. The lady said we learned how to sew and use material to make our dresses from going to church????? She didnt even have the story right for the fancy shawl or jingle....
The guy was boring, his voice wasnt clear nor were his stories for the male dances or songs.
Whoever hires these people to educate non indians about our dances and regalias needs to hire real indians who have the story of our heritage and culture. We were greatly misrepresented to the crowd. Alot of us were sitting there saying "what did they just say? thats not even true..."
Secondly, they ran our category kinda strange....they are on the point system, which works well when you have alot of dancers with grand entry points, exhibition points, etc. But they split our category into two groups, then gave us only one round...the point system cant work fairly if you dont get at least two rounds of competition or at least get a finals. Grass had more dancers than we did, but they had one group, two songs...which is right and fair.
They do have a good program, excellent, excellent hospitality, they end early and stay on schedule. Just a few gliches that can be worked out. . .

I heard it was a disappointment this year. My parents went, but didn't stay very long.

I agree with you Sltate to a "T"
I could hear nothing, at all. The sound was HORRIBLE!
Yes, grass had a ton of dancers and it was 1 group 2 songs.

I have questions about the chicken dance results.[:rolleyes
I was shocked when Keeno Gallegos didn't place?
I thought he would have at least got in, top 3 but he got shut out, when he shouldn't have.

Eyes and I didn't go this year. We got married instead ! We went last year and had a great time and I went the year before and also had a great time. I competed and placed both years, although I'm not sure how ! LOL There were alot of good dancers there. I did find myself wondering at some of the winners in other catagories, but that is a pretty common thing to happen at any pow-wow. In the stands you see differently than when you are down on the floor judging. As far as someone with a name not placing.....well every area has it's favorites, and if you're not one of them you have to dance that much better to be seen. Happens everywhere! As far as the food....well there's a whole lot of vendors there ! We are planning to return there for next years dance as long as the economy will allow it !

Hey WD,
I told Eyes we'd see you there next year and celebrate your 1st anniversary!!
We didn't get to go either..........busted broke and barely hanging onto our jobs........so we stayed home. Sure missed going. Couldn't of danced due to being in mourning, but I would of loved to see everyone...........and ate one of those AWESOME sweet potatos that vendor was selling!!!

See ya later........
