Women in men's clothing.
I was at a powwow recently where there was a female straight dancer. In my lifetime I have also seen female traditional, grass and fancy dancers.
Are we to a point in time now where we should welcome females to do male dances? Does this go against anyones tribal traditions? Should women wear the pants in the family? *L

I've only seen one young woman dance the grass dance seriously (that wasn't in a switch contest). She was at the Skydome powwow and I believe was initiated into the society, I don't think there are many (if any) women that dance in men's outfits over where I am. If they do, usually it's just for a switch dance contest or hoop dance.

LOL ... guess it depends on the men's clothing were talkin about and jus where the woman is wearing it .... JKZ ... im thinking theres some situations where a man wouldnt mind a woman wearing some types of men's clothings LOL
OK ... i have a neighbour .... she is now a young woman of i think 18 now. she has been dancing fancy bustle since she could walk. she is good at it ... as well as her older two brothers who dance it well too. and for a short time my own daughter who is now 6 wanted to dance prairie chicken ... another well known prairie chicken dancer jus asked us about her too he remembered her dancing LOL. she wanted to be jus like daddy LOL i see no problem with it ... as long as protocol is followed. and we know what protocol im talking about in particular ... LOL. i havent had to privilege to see men in women's dance regalia (seriously ... im not talkin about switch dancing) around this area either. i have no problem wit it as long as they respect the dance and the regalia that goes along wit it. it was not a short while ago (relatively) that women have been even allowed to dance ... (fancier) fancy. before that it was strictly on the sides ... a more traditional style of dance ....

I really haven't seen it to notice it really. I did see a man dressed in a dress and go into the circle at a pow wow, now that got some attention there.
But now I have seen a man dress in a women traditional outfit, shawl and all and go into the circle like that. |

We have had the same debate about women dancing Gourd Dance with the men here on Powwows.com in the past...
The Gourd dance is a Men's dance. In the Various Districts in this State the Straight Dance is a Men's dance. I would be very interested to see what the reaction would be to a woman straight dancer attempting to dance at Ilonska or at Whitehorse or Pawhuska... In a powwow we have men's style and women's styles Men look silly dancing buckskin or southern cloth and as for Jingle well.... so on the other side of the coin why do women want to dance mens style except to prove that they can... I have seen a woman Fancy dancer here and for that matter a grass dancer but neither placed... In this day and age of trans-gender changing and same sex marriages those lines are gonna be blurred except we have men's style and woman's style still....
