Competition vs. Money drawing

After weighing the pros and cons of each, which would you rather go to: a competition powwow or a powwow where if your number is called you get to choose a money envelope ranging between $20 and $100?

A contest dance hands down...the singing would more than likely be better. I go to dance and I do enjoy hearing nice music. Dancing in contests is fun for me as it challenges me to do better and become a better dancer.

The "raffle" pow wows are lame. I'd rather there not be any $$ involved at all than attend something like that.

I would prefer to go to the Competition pow wow's myself, even though I don't contest. I've never been to a "Raffle" pow wow but I have been to many where they pay "Day Money" and that's fair accross the board for everyone. But as Wojapi said about the other's, many of these are "Lame" and they don't get in the good drums. But, I have been to two in the past couple of years that really were absolutely awesome.

Let me clarify...

I wasn't talking about "day money" pow wows - those are awesome. I was talking about these "raffle" pow wows.

Sorry, I knew what you were talking about really, but I haven't had the same experience where I am. I've been to about 4-5 pow wow's that are "Day Money" pow wow's and out of that there are only 2 that really stick out in my mind as being awesome. I'm trying to get some of the people I know from out that way to come out for those, they really were GREAT. But the other's that I have been too like this, just well--I think that you might know. It's really location and who's running them, I think. Just my opinion.

I think the raffle thing sounds kinda cool. Around here no one has done anything like that as far as I can remember, and I think it would be all in good fun as long as the dancers understand this coming.

This past year I went to Denver March for the first time, they did not have drum contest, but they had a drummers raffle, I thought it was cool (probably because we got picked).

Also, if the pow-wow was held during a slow time, people might be willing to travel anyway just to hit a pow-wow.

I am down for either, as long as you know what you are getting into, I dont see any problems with them at all.

I went to a pow wow last season that did the raffle thing, and it was actually kind of cool. Everyone there understood how it worked. The MC would announce before a dance when a raffle would be drawn, and after the dancers were in the circle, the arena director would close the circle off, so that noone could sneak in at the last minute, and the Drums would go a couple of songs, and at the end of the songs, the MC would call a kid out to draw a number from a hat, and if that dancer was in the circle, got to come up and pick out an envelope from a seperate hat. There was anywhere from $5 to $100 in each envelope. The really cool thing, was one of the elderly ladies was in the circle unaware that the raffle was going, and they called her number, and she drew $100. That made me feel good, because she had recently lost her husband, and was having a hard time, and that gave her some bill money, and gas to make the next pow wow where she would be vending. My number got drawn a couple of times, the first time I got got like $10, and the second $20 - I took the $20 and split it with 3 young shawl dancers that was out in the circle. There number hadnt gotten called, and it made them feel good to get a few bucks. So, I kinda liked the idea of the raffle. It made everyone feel good, and got the dancers out in the circle for there chance to get some cash. I've only been to a couple of comp. pow wows, some good dancing there, I went to sing backup, but, figured since I was there, Id go ahead and compete. I learned alot from it thats for sure, and eeeek! Im not a good comp. dancer

Wow, I never heard of the raffle thing. Like someone mentioned, I've been to pow-wows where they paid day money for participating which is nice because everyone got paid. It may not have been much, but at least they went home with something.

As for my answer to the question asked, I'd rather go to a competition pow-wow.

Like ac_miss, I have not heard of a money drawing powwow. But it sounds like a good way to get people to dress and dance at a small powwow.

Hmmmm?

They once had a special drum contest sponsored by the family of Cheyenne Brady who was their princess at the time. It got a lot of big name drums in to compete. With them came a lot of good dance competitors, even though the prize money was minimal.

My drum always sets up because it seems like Denver March is traditionally the first BIG powwow of the new year and "opens up powwow season." There are always a lot of powwow committe people from everywhere looking for head staff and host drums for their upcoming powwows later in the year.
