Would you be interested in a forum for the Wicaglata's? (female backup singers)

I think it would be a really good idea to have a Wicaglata forum!!!!! I'm pretty excited about it, since I like meeting other wicaglata, especially from other tribes!!!! YAY!! Good Idea

well considering that I had no idea what that was until I read the post I think this is a great idea. prolly would not post much as it is not something I know really anything about, but would definately read it to learn. women singing well that is just crazy talk. lol.

Since I was a little girl, I've been either humming along, or learning songs as I heard them. I feel so proud when I stand behind my cousins and brothers and sing, proud of them, and their original songs. I especially love the Veteran songs, and I'm not ashamed to cry when I remember my Grandpa.
I can appreciate the wicaglata contests that the bigger powwows are having, but I really cannot see how you can put one woman's talent above or below anothers. It just doesn't seem respectful to the station of a wicaglata (or whatever term is used in other languages). But I can see how it is a contemporary thing....I'm just proud to stand next to my Auntie Cheryl Between Lodges and sing, even though the woman drowns me out!! I also have other favorites, like Michelle Thunder Hawk and the lady who taught me, Candy LeBeau!! But Gramma Nellie Two Bulls could always teach us young'uns a thing or two!!

I think that a Wicaglata forum will help bring attention to this very important aspect of our powwows. The women who "Fan the flames" (loose translation) are there for a purpose, and even if the reason they choose to wicaglata is a deeply personal one, it deserves honor, especially because that honor or even recognition is never sought.

I love seeing little tiny girls kick it out!!!! lilililililililili

Definitely! I don't think that women who sit front row understand this.

Yes! I'd like to learn the etiquette involved from different tribes. Don't want to step on toes. Do you have to be invited to sing? Or related? See what I mean?

Yeah, I think this forum should be created, but you need to call it "women's back up" Because using the "wicaglata" term might make it seem more exclusive to one tribe or northen singing and this forum should be for all women's backup singers.

Oh most definitely it is for all women. The term Wicaglata is pretty well used across the board for the women singers now. Used by different tribes all over the states and in Canada. There are Wicaglata contests now by some of the biggest powwows ..... and it is Northern and Southern.... so it's not exclusive any longer.

The reason why some prefer the term Wicaglata is because it means so much more than just singing behind the men. This is one of the things that would be discussed in the forum when we would get it.
