Chasco Fiesta

Hey out there...got any opinions about Chasco Fiesta? I hear it's pretty good...thinking about going...all indian?

It's a pretty fun powwow, with the parade,the floats, the mari gras beads, the concerts, and the carnival despite it's reputation. It's all Indian for the most part. Parking is a nightmare though.

It's not the powwow, it's the whole concept of Chasco Fiesta (aka Chasco Fiasco).

The story goes that since 1922, Chasco Fiesta has honored the romantic legend intertwining the lives of a Spanish boy and girl, a priest and the Calusa Indian tribe who captured them after defeating a Spanish expedition. According to the story, the boy and girl were later wed as Queen Chasco and her consort Pithla.

In the parade they have people dressed up like Indians and they have an "Indian Queen" and "King" pageant.

Now, I've never seen the parade. I've only heard about Florida AIM protesting at it so I'm not sure if they still do it or not. But they still have the pageant because we see the "contestants" from across the canal from where the powwow is held.
