Info on Creating a Pow-Wow reglia-costume

I want to go to the Gathering of The Nations which will be the first Pow-Wow I will go to. I want to be in Pow-wow contest but I have no Idea how to make a outfit, and where to get materials for it. Any information would be greatful thankyou.

For your first time dancing, I would not recommend Gathering. It is competition Pow Wow. There are very, very few times you'll be able to dance unless you compete.

Gathering is THE largest Pow Wow. If this is your first time dancing and your first time competing it will be a tough weekend.

If want to do it go ahead. I just think you would enjoy a smaller dance for your first time.

Here's a photo of Grand Entry at Gathering to show you the size of this Pow Wow:

Paul makes sence here to compete takes alot of skill and with skill takes practice, you have to know the songs, what the judges are looking for , and you have to know the style you are competeing in. Ive danced since I could walk and been comp dancing for sevral yrs and I still get nervous , theres only been afew times of me comping and not placing. Another thing to consider is at these bigger pow-wow's one has to bea enrolled member of a recognised tribe before you can even compete.

Take the advice of the people who have offered it to you. Even at powwows where you'd be allowed to compete, you're not ready if you've never even been to one. And please go to some. Even if you don't dance, you'll have a great time. If you go to several, watch and learn, you'll be in a better position to decide if you want to compete, or just stick to intertribals, or just watch.

K, I guess what I see alot of people have had years of experience before going into the dance, I should practice for longer then a few months do one or two smaller powwows then after I get experience do a major one. But tell then I would still want to work on a Regalia-costume so where can I get such materials.

Good luck to you, atleat you are ndn - I hope. Most people frown on the usage of the word costume which are usually sold during halloween. Have you been brought into the circle in an appropriate manner? There are discussions that speak to this and you might want to check this out. Again good luck and have fun out there LOL!

I saw there was a big discussion on using costume or regalia, but I normally say regalia-costume since I only refer to regalia as a word for what people wear during pow-wow competions

On-line stores like Crazy Crow can help you, too, but ask people at powwows and they may be able to tell you some more local sources. You'll also see the kinds of materials they use and you'll get a lot of education in one afternoon.

worry about dancing before you worry about competing.

actually, worry about making an outfit before worrying about dancing.

after it is all done, still dont worry about competing.
