Good morning! I'm thinking about having a stand at an upcoming pow wow and want to grill corn on the cob. I'll pull the husks down, remove the silk and soak em' in water for a bit but I wanted to get your suggestions on what seasonings or other condiments I should have available. Also, what would be a reasonable price to charge? I have a tendency to undercharge and don't want to cheat myself. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! |

hey im a boy scout and i camp regularly and we always have corn. if ur cooking it over a fire leave the husk on rap it in tin foil and let it cook like that (not on the fire right on the ashes to the side tho) for about 15 minutes give or take a couple a minutes then just sell it like that id say about 1.50-2.00 is a good price even 2.50 is ok and then just bring a bucket or large bowl full of melted butter and sum salt n pepper and let ppl season it themselves and charge another .25 for dipping it in the butter

Thinks to self... never seen anyone sell corn at a pow wow... seen it at a fair, but not a pow wow... sounds like a great idea though!!!!
I would put out some butter (they got them sqeezable ones now) and sell em for a buck. I would just let em boil personally, maybe strip em and tin foil em over coals, but I'd experiment at home first with cooking time. When they're done put em in a cooler, it'll keep em warm, but accessible. I'd sell em for a buck or buck and a half... and hit a farmer's market for supplies (always good to support the little guy and keep em in business!!!) If you were to sell at that price, you'd sell em quick! Nothing I hate more than a greedy vendor, was at a pow wow recently that the only food vendor was WAY over charging... I got into the van at break and hit McDonalds... LOL. If you think you under charge, look at your sales... are you making a good profit? If so, leave the prices alone, people will look forward to you pulling in! Just my 49 cents worth. Paselo

MMMMM........ corn. Sounds good! I would go with the roast n' ears. Dip butter sounds great too!
What you want to consider before you set your price is the total cost of corn and supplies. Then your vendors fees/license cost. Travel expenses. Total that and x that by the number of ears.... allow a few for falling on the ground... Then take that cost whatever it is and add 10% at least for your self for your business. The figure out your pay. Is it going to price you out of business? Is it worth your time and effort? These are things to be decided. Are you going to offer pop or drinks? Have paper towels and or wipes? Good luck!

you could also make a mixture of seasonings for the folks to sprinkle on later after the buttering
celery salt, onion powder, course ground pepper think about boiling a few corn in water and grill them for a few moments when they order them the husks is good but if you are looking for convienience and and ease for your customers then take the husks off you will have plenty of flavor if you can purchase good sweet corn from a local farmers market since you are servicing the gereral public you don't want to use sugar in your water becasue of diabetics, and special diets there are some great butter alternatives with great taste for this kind of situatuation get some sturdy sticks and shove them through the core then you can dip them in butter and the people can season themselves. as for price if you can get a bushel for under 20 dollors then go for a buck or $1.50 that should be sufficent to make your costs back good luck that corn sounds good use some sturdy deli papers they will soak up the butter and not get all over the people if you have a gordons Food service near you they have a great business discount for small businesses and great prices they are like my favorite toy store whenever I have a cateering event. Great Suggestions!
All the comments I received were wonderful and was exactly what I was looking for. I am definitely going to do Dweick's ideas and have a little special blend available and pick up some deli papers too. Chi Miigwetch for all your support!

Mmmmmm.......we did that just this weekend. We mixed in some chili powder, lime juice and butter and spread that butter mixture all over the corn. The wrapped the corn up in foil and put on the gril for 15 minutes. It was really good!!!
Of course, we're from the southwest......so we kind of like that chili and lime butter!!! |

IN L.A...........back when I was a chola...LOL. Kidding.
They sell 'elotes' (corn on the cob) as a street vendor and they put mayonnaise, sprinkle parmesean cheese on it, then lemon juice, and some chili powder.......awwww man, that was to die for!! I can't wait til I go back for the SCIC Powwow cuz I get to back to the 'hood' and get some Elotes...mmmmmmmmm. But they sell corn here in the SW, roasted at most of the powwows, roasted (in the husks) with a big portable grill, they are soooooo good. They have been selling them from 2-5 a ear, and if you're really lucky, they'll sell it for .50 or a 1.00 late at night when they are trying to get rid of them.

They got a business here that sells corn as vendors at state fair, renaissance fair.. stuff like that. They remove the silk, pull the husks back up, soak the corn in water before grilling, then to serve they just pull the husks down and it makes a natural handle to hold the cob. They put out butter, salt, pepper, parmesan cheese and red pepper. But up here, they sell it for 3.50-4.00 a cob. But then hey.. this is alaska.
