Midnight Special

I realize that there is some confusion about the Midnight Special at Gathering this year. It is a Men vs. Women Smoke Dance. 3 men and 3 women will be chosen as the 6 finalists that will dance off against each other. Then, 1 man and 1 woman will be chosen, and from these 2, the winner will be selected. The 6 finalists get some $$$, and the runner-up and winner get more. The special is for those 18 years of age and older, and you have to have the proper outfit, but other than that...Its open to anyone- INCLUDING NON-IROQUOIS folks. If you can Smoke Dance, then I really encourage you to try it.

But just in case there were a few questions about it..I know the flyer and the website did not clarify ALL of this...

I hope a lot of ppl go for it!! After seeing the all-around special in Toronto that included Smoke dance, I seen some non-Iroquois gals there that could give some Iroquois ones a major run (er-dance rather) for the money!!!! Plus the Smoke Dance singer will help them jam out-he's a pro at getting that "smoke/dust" flying! Good luck to y'all.

ill be going to gathering w/my bf & i sure wish i could do the special being an oneida smoke dancin chick, but i wont be 18 until may which sucks cause its only a month later. but hey i cant wait to see who all goes for it & here some good smoke dance songs. love watching it but dancing it is even better. good luck to y'all who plan on doing it & may the best "smoker" win!!! cant wait to watch y'all.

That special was sweeeeett!...I know a few of them were really shy about dancing afterward-but everyone did really well. My family was pleasantly surprised at the number of ladies that give it a try. I hope they all make it out to GON.

So dance the special but make the judges aware that you're not contesting. At the end of the 1st round, excuse yourself. Next year, when you're 18, you'll have a year of GON experience under your belt and and you can be the winner!

I don't know if there is going to be a Smoke Dance Special next year. Its not a usual category at GON. Maybe someday, though!

Just asking cause I seen the Smoke Dance on powowows.com and it look interesting to watch, I'd like to see an exhibition during our Yakama Nation Treaty Days Pow-wow in June. or anywhere locally to see it!!!

If people know that someone Smoke Dances, sometimes folks want them to do an exhibition. The only catch is finding someone who can sing the songs.

I, myself, do not like to exhibition because it reminds me how out-of-shape I really am!

But if you go to GON in April, you will get to see the best Smoke Dancers. Its a little unusual for them to travel so far west, because there isn't usually a contest for them. Be there od be square.

(I know thats corny, but I always wanted to say that.)

Alright folks, I just got an update that the winner of this special gets a 3 day trip to Hawaii, and the runner-up gets the 3 day trip to Las Vegas.
There should be flyers floating around now that are being sent by GON...

Ok, I dont want to discourage the folks that want to exhibition in this special, but it can't happen-

The reason being the judges might get confused. There might be a song for everyone to dance to, but I don't know that. Im sorry about this tho...

DANG IT! too bad i don't fly. i wouldn't mind going to hawaii!! hahahahaaa jk. i should come out of retirement for this one!!! AYE!! ~ my only concern is the judging~ you want it "old style".....how will judges know what to look for? how do you know they won't be picking the "untraditonal ones" doing kart wheels and flips and showing off real ACE? well hummph. dat was my only question for yas. other than that....you go represent miss cassie!!! lots of support behind ya!
