Switch Dancing anyone?

What do you think of switch dancing?

I have heard a lot of pros and cons (from some "real" pros and cons) *L

One pro argument is that it adds to the powwow.

One con argument is that it is disrespectful to some of the dances and elders.

Have you ever switch danced?

Whatcha' think?

Switch dances were real popular back in Louisiana, almost every powwow had ad least one, sometimes one per session. Here ins NC, I have not seen one yet. I personally enjoyed them and wish they had more of them. My comment about the elders is that back in LA, they had elders joining in the fun and doing them. It did seem to add to the powwow. Just my $.02.

I can see how men would find it disrespectful, but a lot of women take it very seriously. I have contemplated switch dancing several times. As of yet I haven't because I want to be really good before I ask someone to borrow his outfit. I don't want to mess around, ya know? My nephew said he'd let me wear his and I took that as a compliment and not lightly at all.

Anybody know where the switchdance originated? That will be good information if anybody does.

___

I have to admit, WhoMe has switchdanced.

But, it was a lllllllllllllllllllllllllong way from home and the $500 first place Canadian prize money was very enticing!!!

I wore big moccasins, goats and made a skirt out of an old shawl. My back yoke and vest were made from two empty pepsi cases, as was my head feather. My shawl was made out of spliced black garbage bags.

My only flaw was the paper grocery bag I wore over my head. It had a beautiful woman painted on the front, with two little eye slits in the front to see out of and breath. On the back of was a painted woman's head .....

Once the song started, the paper bag immediately turned sideways and I was completely in the dark inside what soon became a head sauna. I was totally disalllusioned during the contest song and it was not a pretty sight.

For my efforts - I won a consolation prize of $100 Canadian dollars!!!!

Kkat,

For $500 and 6 places and 3 honorariums, we were serious!

Well, you know what I mean.

Anyways, JoeSam Scabbyrobe won first place. He was pretty funny and good from what I hear.

I wouldn't know because .... I was in the dark.

On time....

I've danced in several switch contests back when i lived in CO and won too. haha... Anyways, this once contest there was alot guys competing, women just put shawls on any guy and they were in the contest. There was about 40 daners out there, the split us up into two groups and we had to dance one song. Then the called back about 16 dancers and we had to dance another song. Then they called back 8 dancers danced another song. Then..... they called back 4 dancers, by this time the contest was getting serious. haha... We had to dance one more song and this time all they pulled some serious moves and got down to business. Then to top things off i had to dance a tie for first. I ended up winning the contest and for my efforts of having to dance 5 songs, I got a 6 pack of coke and 10 bucks.... haha...

I saw the funniest switch dance at Seminole Tribal Fair. They paid 5 places and first was $1000.

Dale Oldhorn, MC, made and interesting observation. He said the women dancers take it very serious and really dance well. The guys seem to take this chance to live out some kind of sick fantasy. LOL

I don't know where this dance originated. Or even when the first time I saw it. But it was the funniest thing to see one of the most well known fancy dancers giving a lap dance to one of the most well known chicken/grass dancers. I still laugh about it.
