March 4th and 5th of 2006 there is a powwow at Baker community college in Owosso Michigan. The intertribals sessions start Saturday 1p and 7p, and on Sunday the session starts at noon.

I have never saw gourd dancing in this part of the country. The people of the Three Fires have never conducted such a dance. This is a southern midwest tradition.

I have, however, heard of a powwow in that town, but have never had the urge to go.
Is someone starting a new old tradition?

I was watching HGTV one night and this lady, as a hobby, was carving gourds for display in her home. The finished product were very nice looking. Is this the type of gourd that they'll be using in this dance?

The people who have ran this powwow for years and years have a strong connection to Oklahoma, and gourd dancing. Thats why this year they are having gourd dance sessions.

The dance is a good, and a good time is always had by all.

Well if your that close you should come to the dance. There is a feed saturda night and the food is great. No contest just good family stlye powwow.

What I want to know is when is George going to quit being the token NDN for these white freak fests? You notice he's the only blood on that list. Some of those dudes maybe nice guys but damn he needs to chill on supporting the hokey drums and dancers.

Lets look at the Pow Wow at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. If I'm not mistaken (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong) it started out as a "hobbyist" dance to help educate the public there on campus and the surrounding community. Now, its nothing uncommon for 8-10 drums to show up and be jam packed with dancers.

A good question for us all to think about is why do we Pow Wow?

Dude I know why the hell I powwow and it's to paticipate in MY culture, it's not to support some freaks that want to steal and *******ize and make a buck off my culture!

These people are in it for the show, glory and self satisfaction. The drums can sing some wrong songs or words and the people don't even know. You know, same story different day.

Just so we are clear, I was not questioning why you pow wow but thanks for sharing.

For those of us who know, its up to us to decide whether or not we're gonna adapt b/c I think its pretty obvious some people are gonna continue to do "what they think is right". Does this mean I agree with them? Absolutely not! But certainly one way we can adapt is to not participate in some practices. And I too can safely say that there have been some places I have not gone to and others I will not go to. Another way to adapt is to educate others. Lets face it, our younger generations are not always so willing to learn. Then what do you do? Some of us have been a little more blessed than others.

This is not an attack, just stating thoughts for everyone to chew on.

Dude, first off you need to quit bogardin' cause that must be some damn good stuff there!

Yeah, younger generations aren't so willing to learn, yeah, so what. Then what will we do? Nothing. If it dies with the next generation then so be it. It will die with the ones that it belongs to . Nuff said? Yeah, I don't WANT it to die off, one day when I have kids I'll do what I can to teach em. But damn. If they chose to let it die then so be it. Don't give the $hyt away, don't sell it.
