What? Natives need passports????
I have just heard from two sources that due to the terror threat, First Nations and American Indians now need passports to cross into and from the US/Canadian border.
Is this true? Can anyone provide anymore information? Is the Jay Treaty not being taken into consideration? This is going to affect many powwows if it is true.

As of Dec.31,2006, anyone entering or re-entering the U.S.a. by air, or train, will have to have a government issued i.d. card. It is still unsure of the Aboriginal peoples status on this. They are working on it. To be sure, the Jay Treaty will have some bearing on the decision.
At first, passports were to be mandatory, but the opted for the card. I imagine Canada will also require those ( for lack of a better word) passport cards. I cross quite frequently for powwows, so instead of being denied entry, I'll probly get one. In Canada, we have a new status card that looks pretty official with the magnetic stripe and all, so that might be the one that status Indians may use. We'll see. That's all I know. I had to come back and correct the date. I shoulda put Dec. but I put Jan.

Kiwehnzii, No wonder I am just hearing of this new rule! It is less than two weeks old! Then it IS true! The two American Indians that recently crossed two different borders had no problems getting into Canada, but were DETAINED trying to reenter the United States! One of these Indian individuals is a household name in Indian country!!!! Passport time EVERYBODY?????

My question would be how are First Nations that live in the US permanently as 'legal resident aliens' supposed to get their passport/travel ID card now when they never needed it to get here too start with?
Sounds like this is the current situation my wife and son now find themselves.

Because this rule is recently being enforced, many parts of this rule have yet to be sorted out. Does your wife and son look like aliens? Have they been known to terrorize? *L How bout' that cute lil' daughter? Hywalker, I'm coming in on Thursday night. I'm not sure where they are putting me up yet. But I will see you at the events center sometime on Friday!

I recently had to get a passport for travel to Mexico for work-related reasons. Never thought I would have a passport, I was always used to having my status card and everything being all cool. Getting the passport wasn't too painful. If you are in the States, it will cost $97 total if you don't want it expedited within 14 days ($153 if you need it IMMEDIATELY). The post office can process it for you. They have the forms there as well. You will need Proof of U.S. Citizenship (certified birth certificate), Proof of Identity, 2 color pictures and the fees. Here is the link to the U.S. Department of State where you can get more information: http://travel.state.gov/ |
