Women Head Drum Judges
We're planning for our annual pow-wow this summer. We're doing all of the typical duties a pow-wow committee does. As I was thinking about head staff.....M.C.'s, Head Dance Judges, Arena Directors....etc. a thought crossed my mind. While I was thinking about a Head Drum Judge, I wondered....Why isn't there ever a woman head drum judge?
I thought about how some group don't allow women around the drum BUT I know that doesn't stop a male head drum judge from choosing them to help them out during contests. What I'm saying is, if a woman can help judge during a drum contest.....what is stopping them from acting as a head drum judge? I know there are some pretty good back up singers that know what's going on as far as drum contest goes. I don't really know what I think about it. I was just wondering what everybody else thinks........SO what do you think? |

Actually, there has been women drum judges. Though it is NOT common, it does happen. The best example is the Gathering of Nations. Sunny Rose Yellow Mule and Delia Weskawitch served as head southern and northern drum judges. __ What about an all women powwow - where no men were allowed? *L j/k

I guess I didn't know about them acting as head drum judges. That's cool though.
I wonder what the singers thought of that? I wonder if why it isn't that common. I think it would cause a stir up this way because of how strict our area is. Thanks for sharing that info. How long ago was that? |

It did cause quite a stir when Delia & Sunny Rose did that job at the gathering, but the results did turn out pretty good. Lots & lotsa comments on here, but seems like everybody got over it.
Karen was A.D. at some powwow in Manitoba. At least I think it was Manitoba. |

Kiwehnzii, Karen? ____ Heck there needs to be a powwow with an all women committee, a women emcee, women arena director, all woman host drum and women head drum judge. Let the women do all the powwow organizing and have the men cook and serve the meal and clean up afterward! Yeah Right? *L

in this day and age - why the hell not?!?
r u sayin that women are incapable of being head judges - whether it be drummin/dancin? any1 thats says so is full of shy-et ... lol we aren't stupid and unable to pick fair judges, calculate points, etc. we know how songs are suppose to be sung, to hear/see mistakes, protocol around the drum ... well at least i do. i know songs ... and if a lead is off or wrong ... men can be classified as "catty" too ... i've seen it first hand so men can't say it doesn't happen .... even more so. i've seen where a male judge skewed the results for a certain group to NOT place in a drum contest.

why not
Well women, have came along way in the pow wow areana..you always here people compaining no matter what ever happens...who is involved or who placed or not..etc. etc.. so no matter ever you do..you will never please 100% of the ppl..100% of the time... perhaps..these things are meant to occur ..maybe its the natural time and order for them to take place....just observe closely and patiently..maybe what you are seeing is history in the making ? I hear there is a female co MC at Kiyo in Missoula Montana this year. The older adult women who are in the pow wow areana have been in their just as long as the men are...maybe its just time for things like this to occur...so , who knows..maybe it is time for "us" men to get the brooms out and start taking care of these women folk....heh heh
anyhow ill be at the strip club...

YaY!!!
I think it would be really cool for woman to be involved more in the judging, cuz not only do men know what to look for in singerz but I think woman could help out alot especially when it comez to those drumz that have backup.
YaY womanz LIB!!! LoL

Kiweh, That's who I thought you meant. ___ Yeah! Women's Lib! There needs to be a "women's only" powwow circuit. Head women co-emcees Head She-man dancer Head area director/whip person (and carry a bull whip)! Only all women drums allowed, so they can be judged by women drum judges. An all women rabbit dance/two step! Women can do everything by themselves....... "except snag."

Well, eyez. I don't know how well it would be accepted. Remember, now, you live in the middle of Anishinaabe territory. D'ya remember the incident at that one of the bigger Mich. powwows where some of the ladies from the lodge approached a female singer sitting at the drum. They explained to her that this is Ojibwe territory and this is not acceptable. I wouldn't want to be in her shoes. Anyways, keep that in mind, when yusses talk about it.
This is your powwow and you can do what you want. Have fun. |
