For quite a few years, tour buses have been bringing tourists to Taos Pueblo, and the pueblo has trained native grade-schoolers and teenagers to give a spiel and guide the tourists around.

One lady asked a young female guide, "My poor dear, have you ever had a hamburger"?

A man asked another guide why she wasn't dressed in buckskins and feathers. Her response was, "For the same reason you aren't dressed like Abe Lincoln with a beard and top hat."

There are certain areas around the village that are off limits, so elongated sawhorse-looking barriers were put up at alley entrances, etc. A man asked one tour guide what that wooden thing was. He must've thought it was an artifact. She said, "Why, it's a big sawhorse"! End of story.

I was asked a while ago why I had really long hair, was it because I was ndn ,I saw naw my long hair keeps me warm when I run around naked. And after I saw jaws drop i waked away.

A Powwow is attended by people of all walks of life and
IF the PERSON that I was Describing WAS ACTUALLY Performing A NATIVE RELIGIOUS PRACTICE Then I would have said nothing
SINCE This WAS NOT THE CASE
I said that it had no Business in this setting
If it was for Entertainment Purposes and to Demonstrate to the Uniformed what a Smudging was that is one thing
This was performed and had no Business where it was performed
The Man "claimed" He was Cherokee
I am Cherokee and Know of NO Ceremony That is PERFORMED with a TURKEY FAN AND Tobacco/Sweet Grass at a POWWOW...

My bad, I was the one that gave you the bad rep. I did because In your original post you didn't mention the fact that turkey feathers, tobacco and sweetgrass were used and that it was made into some sort of production. I took offence because at the powwows here in my area we do have certain spiritual events happening during or before the powwow including smudging during G E. These things are done inconspicuously and they are not open to the public, and it was to this that it seemed you were referring. When I posted my objection you explained the rest of the story. After reading this and clearing up your meaning I did give you a positive rep to make up for the negative one when the system allowed me to do so.

P.S. I agree that turkey fans and an off the wall tobacco smudge is crap.

I understand why you gave me bad Rep, now that I know who gave the bad rep and we both learned something from this...

I had the thought in my head what i wanted to say and did a POOR job of communicating what I had actually witnessed at this Powwow.

I myself have been cedar off but in a private setting and as you have stated this is something that your own tribe does.

This is not Newage this is an old way and what we should be perserving and teaching our young ones...

heres the thing folks, native religious practices are called such because they are practiced by native peoples. granted, many people dont know the practices of thier own people and take part in the practices of others. but replacing what you dont know with what ever fits or what ever you can make up doesnt make it native religious practice. it makes it mystical crap.

PS..... having brook medicine eagle sign off on it doesnt make it lgit either
