Talking Not surprised

Since I've worked at many pow wows in CA, and we're always in a visible place, we CONSTANTLY get this question...

"Can you tell me where the (insert favorite tribe here) are sitting?"

example: Can you tell me where the Hopi's are sitting?
Do you know if the Canadian Indians are here?, Can you please point out which dancers are the Sioux dancers?

We also get the: How many Kiowa dancers are here? Are there any Cherokee dancers/singers here? Can you tell me how many tribes are here?

Also, since were in Cali alot, many non natives come up to REGISTRATION and ask if they can register with a tribe, since their Great grandmothers father was part something or other.
GO FIGURE!!!!!!!!!!!

I won't even get into the dumb questions that the skins ask...
HAHAHA

OMG cali. To funny. That rule back east, what would happen if the head dancer stopped to pick something up, would that cause a rear end collision of those trying not to pass that person. Of if the person picks up speed and then slows down, would everyone do they same. Or if for some wierd reason they turned around, would everyone turn around. East coast ideas seem so strange to me. In all my years I have never heard of such a thing.

I was at the West Seattle High School powwow about ... oh 3-4 years ago ... sitting with an old style Sioux drum led by a fullblood from Rosebud, late 50's, the hair, the cheeks, the shnoz and everything ... and hates new agers more than I do (and I didn't think it was possible). Anyway he comes up to me late in the powwow, all uncomfortable-looking and points at some white woman in a black dress looking sort of like Elvira, and says, "Jim, go tell that woman over there that I can't put a song into her drum."

So I go walking over toward her, she sees me coming from him and smiles that kind of smile that makes you just want to look and walk in a different direction, I said, "Ma'am, Mr. (name omitted) cannot put a song into your drum."

She immediately gets this really sad look, grabs this tambourine looking thing with dyed fluffs dangling from it, holds it like a baby and while looking down at it, sadly and softly lips the words, "I'm sorry" while shaking her head "no".

Crept me out but I almost laughed, too.

I think that particular "rule" is in the Mid Atlantic states. New England is weird but we don't do that. Would be pretty funny to watch though.

I kept my mouth shut but I really wanted to say that in my 20 years of dancing all over the country, this little rule was definitely news to me. Then I almost laughed at the thought of a pile-up if the Head Dancers were too slow....!
I read this a few days ago and have been thinking about it and laughing...could someone please tell me HOW this is supposed to work considering that the arena is round? I mean, what if there's a really slow dancer in the arena, how do they know he's behind the Head dancers and NOT in front of them?????

This could possibly be the dumbest "local custom" I've ever heard of!!

Being from NASCAR country, I'm wondering if the head dancers pass the slow dancers, if later on those dancers can then pass the head dancers to get their lap back? As Skybird says, technically they're still behind the head dancers in that case.

Where do they get this stuff from? Me, probably.

I was sitting under my tradish canopy at an Ohio powwow minding my own business , keeping outta the sun. My younger good-lookin' buddy had set-up next to me.
This young lady came by several times and finally stopped to talk to me. She asked me a few questions and then finally sez, "Could you give me an Indian name?"

Trying to be straight-faced, I sez, " I really can't do it right now. I takes preperation on my part and yours. I'll have to dream about it tonight, but for your part, you'll have to spend the night with my eldest son who is sitting right over there under the next canopy." She looks at him, and sez, " I'll be back later. I'll let you know." She walked away, glancing occasionally in my buddys direction. He didn't hear a word we said. A few times during the afternoon, she walked by sometimes staring, smiling and he'd return the smile not knowing what I had said to her.
My wife and I were just crackin' up watching this. I finally had to tell him. We all had a good laugh.

She never came by again after she saw that my buddy had a female visitor sitting with him later.

It's fun.

OMG...LMAO!!! Man these r just too funny...I think I may have woke up every one n my house laughing so much...

But anyhoo...speaking of yahoos...boy does So. Cali have their share. I went to a few pws last year that just made me say.."WHAT THE???" and then walk away shaking my head in shame...or had me laughing so much that I couldnt contain myself...... okay at one they had a fire pit set up in the middle of the arena and a "fire keeper" whom every time he enter and leave the arena he would either walk in backwards or kneel down. Then they also had some bowl full of I think tobacco..maybe it was a blend of sage and cedar...dunno I didnt look...but they let all the dancers and the public go and make their offering to the fire...Man I didnt stay long enough to see what else they did I just passed out sum flyers and left...

Then at another one of these LA area pws I guess it was a combo pw and Aztec dance because between every round of intertribals the Aztec dancers would come out and dance...and mind you their were only like 5 drums there. Dont get me wrong I totally have nothing against aztecs but when you go to a pow wow to dance it sucks when you have to sit down every 15 minutes....

I can go on and on with some of the things that happen at some of these So. Cali pws....but I wont.....maybe tomorrow..lol
