My favorite is "The Men's Traditional Dancer tells a story when they dance."

Traditional dancers that take this literally and try and tell a story through dance .... well, look cheesy.

Here's my interpretation of one dancer I saw, in a dance perfomance, after the dance emcee said "the traditional dancer will be telling a story when he dances....."

"There was this hungry, broke Indian guy who was standing in the commodity line. He looked down and saw a half eaten sandwich and swooped down to pick it up. Right before his happy little hands touched the half eaten sandwich, a village dog beat him to it and ran away with the sandwich in his mouth. He instantly gave a war hoop and gave chase, running through the reservation - bobing and weaving all the while!"

*Seriously folks. I can appreciate a dignified traditional dancer who doesn't put in a lot of "hocus-pocus."

speaking of seafood.

my aunt is a cokehead, we were at Olive Garden for my grandmothers 85th. (she wanted REAL italian food!!!) I ordered Calamari (calamod-for the italians here) My cokehead aunt ordered stuffed mushrooms(go figure-schrooms) and offered me some, I delined becuase I hate mushrooms. She says...

"Is that an Indian thing?"

I was so pissed. I wanted to ask her...

"Is mushrooms a cokehead thing?"

jingle dress

Well, being Ojibwa (the tribe that brought us the jingle dress) I can tell you that Anishinaabe Jingle dancers DO have 365 cones on their dress I was told this many times since I was a kid this is more of a ceremonial dance for Anishinaabek than it is for other tribes that have adopted this style. The Ojibwa name for this dance is Mashkiikii zhigaawin or in English, medicine dance. Its origin is well known and it does have a specific ceremonial purpose. I won't go into it too much because these things shouldn't be talked about on the net however I'll bet the "yahoo" that told you that was either an Anishinaabe, has lived around, or is in some way connected to us.

You all just slay me!!!!!
The RED CEDAR BAND(?) that's a kick in the seat. Where is their seat among the seven bands.

I wonder if Wardancer got that Tradish step down? I would think that this story dance would really never happen since there really are very few small dogs left in most NDN communities. I guess this dog had to be one realllllly fast dog.

My wife and I will drive for an hour to eat at a real good seafood buffet,w/ Snow Crabs, all kinds of Shrimp, Oysters, Clams, even Crawdads, etc.

Mato Winyan, I think I have seen that barefoot backward dancing Apache guy. I asked a singer if he knew what this guy was doing. Told me he was acting as a "rear guard". As for why the guy was barefoot, we were both puzzled.

At one powwow out east, I was merrily dancing along during an intertribal when the Head Lady pulls my sleeve. She practically yanked me to a stop to tell me that the local custom was that no one dances past the Head Dancers in the arena. I was like "Huh?" I kept my mouth shut but I really wanted to say that in my 20 years of dancing all over the country, this little rule was definitely news to me. Then I almost laughed at the thought of a pile-up if the Head Dancers were too slow....!
