Powwow Changes

Would you say that powwows have changed over the last 10 years?

How about the last 20 years?

If so, how have they changed?

Can you at least think of a few things? Unless you truly want to write a thesis paper. hehe. Might make a good book too.

Well for a start....

20 years ago, 1/3 of powwow participants weren't even born yet!

Now that they are in the arena, they all have new ideas and outfits that weren't around 20 years ago!

Also, some people who had never been to a powwow 20 years ago, are now running powwows!

Going back twenty years, you're taking us to a time when fancy dancers were just starting to put ribbon off our bustles LOL

Changes...here's a few I can think of:

1. Beadwork has gotten more intricate and blingy! As a bead artist, this is something I think is awesome.
2. Applique' clothwork has become commonplace in all styles and has gotten increasingly intricate.
3. There's a heck of a lot more drum groups now...back in 1986, there were probably less than 100. Just a guess. Maybe not even 50?
4. Prairie Chicken Dancing wasn't known to many.
5. Jingle Dancing was just making a "comeback".
6. Yarn was the "in" thing for grass dancers in 1986...still is to a certain extent, but ribbon is becoming more and more prevalent.
7. You don't hear as many of the "older" songs these days.
8. In 1986, there wasn't any of the gang-influenced behavior at pow wows...Snoop Dogg didn't hit until around 1991 LOL

Now there is by far more pow-wows than 10 yrs ago. Casino's have had serious influence on prize monies giving out. The number of categories has increased, as well as age divisions.

I think it was about 10 yrs ago when Wallace Coffey rapped the whole grand entry... haha....
