This was long time ago, happened to my sister. Some little white girl came up to her, and said, " Can I take your picture, you look just like Pocahontas". That was at Ann Arbor, MI. I thought it was hilarious.

Back when I was working in Arkansas, I had a woman ask me if I lived in a teepee when I went back home. hahaha.... Of course I had to make a smart remark in return. I said "Why yes I do, and for central heat we build a fire in the middle". Haha... And proceeded to tell her that I drove a mustang.
Needless to say she got a little pissed off.... |

I was once told this by an enthusiast. " Wow, its cool that you are an Indian, what year did you become a real one?"
My jaw dropped to the floor! I told her, I became one Indian when Columbus got lost and thought he landed in India. She didn't get it of course, and I was so busy being a "Real" Indian, I didn't stick around to explain. |

i took my friend to her first powow last nov. at Santa Fe Springs, Ca. she's italian. she asked " where do dancers buy their outfits? at a store that sells outfits to actors?" i just cracked up!!! i told her they make their own outfits. she was impressed. then she says "look, the MC is hurt! he's got bandages on the top of his head, see the white on top of it?" i told her" he's not hurt, that's where he missed getting the hair dye!!!" then she says "he's so cute! what tribe is he?" i tell her " he's not indian, he claims to be chiricahua apache, but he's not-- he's italian. that's why he dyes his hair!!" she enjoyed the powwow, but there wasn't alot of dancers. we plan to go to casino powows because there's more dancers there.

one time..about five years ago i was in super walmarts in chubbuck idaho, waiting at the checkout line (this was during ft hall pw time) and this lil blond hair blue eyed girl was just staring at me...and then she told her mom, pointing at me: look she looks like an indian! and i just kinda laffed to myself, and here her mom looks at me and says: oh yes dear, doesnt she look like pocahontas?? lol..i was like dang...just standing right in front of me, looking at me like i was some sort of exhibit or something...lol after the mom said that, thankfully the next lane opened and i hurried over to it..just to get away from them silly white people...hehehe

We were singing at a dance in LA, on the second day this white lady stopped by and told us she liked the way we sounded. She then asked if we could sing the song that we'd sung the day before, "you know the one with hey ya in it."
Needless to say we laughed about that for the rest of the weekend.

The comment that I hate and that I hear all the time is "I love how you are all so close to the Earth, so respectful of nature"... One of these days I'm gonna turn around and say, "What are you TALKING about??? I don't know how to recycle, I drive a big truck, I use styrofoam plates, and the trash in my town isn't compacted, it's BURNED!!" |

Not just White folks
I always have blacks approach me and tell me what I am. I tell that that I'm an Indian. Oh they go on about how they are part Indian but don't know what part or what tribe. They go on and on about it. Then they have the nerve to ask me where they can get a number so they can get grants for school. I just tend to walk away because it makes me sick to my stomach when thats all they think about....is how we get free money (which I have yet to see).
