Gift Recycle

I was watching Good Morning America yesterday morning as I was getting ready for work. One of the featured segments was about people who get gifts and either regive them away or sell them online.

It made me think about how Indian people get gifts at powwow giveaways and regive these gifts at their giveaway(s).

From personal experience, I get a good cache of giveaway gifts and keep them in storage until needed for a giveaway.

The early spring giveaways seem to be when I have plenty (pendletons, quilts, blankets, etc).

The summer giveaways are more frequent and I find I have less to give.

Do you do recycle giveaway items?

Have you ever received a gift you gave away? *L

Many folks calling it regifting.... I used to do it alot more when I was broke....

I couldn't wait for those early presents - I would give to my people and they would think - how thoughtful... and if they asked too many questions, I would have to fess up...

But I think it can be very thoughtful - just making sure that gifts are not wasted....

i gave away some fabric, kinda distinct. I couldn't figure out what to make with that piece of fabric, and had it in my sewing pile for about three years -that's why i had given it away. About a year later i got it back at another give away. It was sewed into a wing dress. i really didn't care to have it back, but appreciated the thought effort put into it. I think i gave that dress to someone who visited my home *L

Great topic!

I was told one time that it was an honor for the person that gave the original gift for you to re-gift it at a giveaway. Since you should give the best you have, if you give what someone else gave you then you honor them and thier gift.

Aaniin niji,

Here in Florida giveaways are less and less a part of pow wows. I dont know if people are being cheap or ignorant. At some pow wows I no longer see a head staff.

Myself when I do serve as headman, I try to get a bunch of stuff together and get ready for a giveaway. I do keep stuff that is given to me, that I cant use on my outfit, or is unpractical, and recycle or regift. I hope someday the item can find a home where it can be used.

i have no problem with the re-gifting. so long as you keep track of when you got the gift and when you give it too. and where is impotant too.
