Cool pow wow. A LOT of people! It seems like the pow wows around here are really drawing big crowds this season. These social pow wows are usually pretty cozy with a fair amount of people. This one and the Gila River and the Wellness pow wow (especially) have been drawing really big crowds with both tourists and natives. Last night was, true to form, laid back. A lot of dancers, more tourists but not too many, not too many vendors, and, of course, not too much in the way of food. $3 for a very small fry bread, $6 for a taco. The sound was cutting in and out during grand entry (bummer) but recovered for the rest of the pow wow (as long as I was there anyway). They called the dancers out by age group (young boys, women over 17, etc.) so that was different. They also called out the Veterans for a dance, which turned out to be a high point. People started bailing out around 9-ish as the air started to cool. There were some dance groups during the dinner break (Hopi, Zuni, and I think some others). Now it's time to get ready for the Ft. McDowell pow wow this coming weekend!
