undefinedundefinedYou are so right!! Indians come in all colors and the face of Native America is changing. Cherokees have intermarried for centuries so we have a wide range of colors. We must learn to judge by a person's heart not their skin color. This skin color game was learned from the racists who came here.

When I was young, I wore my hair long and my skin was darker and people always asked if I was Native. Now I have have to wear my hair short and my skin is like yellow durning the winter and dark in the summer. Who knows. Try being only 1/4 Native. We get it from all directions. People wonder why I try only to live the Red way. I've read stories, most likely written by the white side, that said some Native leaders were of fair skin, or hazzle eyes, lighter and wavy hair. Who really knows the truth. But like those of us on the East, our blood has been mixed for so many years and it's going to spread through out. Just keep the old ways the best we can, accept each other who wish to walk the Spirit path, and never hate.

there is nothin' wrong with being light skinned (as long as ur ndn...lol jk) When you're darker like me, people always assume your mexican. then when i tell them I'm not mexican I'm Indian aka: Native American, they always look at me like i'm some kinda liar but its easy to get over it |

I know right...Like, "you can't be native american...they don't exist anymore." ROFL. Like we're extinct. It's getting close, but not yet people. Or if you tell them you're native, they are like, whatever....you don't live in a teepee.....WTF?? Wow........apparently all other nationalities advanced along with technology, but not us. People amaze me.

I read this and I was thinking about how many times I have heard that there are not any Indians left, or that I am to fair skinned to be Native American.... I am very fair, I got all the Irish and Scot genes in the family... dark brown eyes and hair and lilly white skin, my brothers have dark brown hair, beautiful tan skin( that never gets sunburn) and hazel eyes and they get they can't be native cause they don't have brown eyes... so it amazes me that in this century we are still judged by the color of our skins... I don't think that we were ever Red... well I am after a weekend at a pow-wow or gathering.
I guess that I just blow them off because I know who I am, and I am happy in my skin no matter what color it is... tell the people that are nay sayers that to bite you....

to the original poster - People are going to be awful. I"ve seen it my whole life between different Indians, but don't let it get you down. Keep dancing hard. I was always proud of my lighter skinned relatives when they danced and placed. So out dance them and if they are still awful then call them up in front of the dance and explain who you are and what you are doing and pay them off. (or is that just a southern thing?)
. Good luck to you. |
