Fort Cherokee will have jewelry, pottery, beadwork, leather crafts, and other Native American arts and crafts for sale. Fort Cherokee is a Native American owned and operated business which has been in the Williamsburg area for over 20 years. Originally built by Daniel Ordonia and his brother, Irving, members of the Cherokee Indian Nation, Fort Cherokee Campground & Trading Post was located near Busch Gardens. Upon retirement, Ordonia sold the business to his daughter, Cathy Moore, and the store, was relocated to its current home in Colonial Town Plaza. Ordonia, a decorated Korean veteran and prisoner of war, continued to travel to Pow-Wows and other Native American events, as well as local heritage festivals, until he passed on in 1999. Moore and her family have continued the tradition of trading on the “Pow -Wow Trail” weekends, while continuing to operate her business in Williamsburg. Moore’s store is frequently a gathering place for local Native Americans, as well as those traveling the East Coast Pow-Wow circuit, where informal conversation is shared and traditional crafts, such as beadwork items, are created. Moore is quick to quote, “Walk the good road … be dutiful, respectful, gentle and modest … be strong with the warm, strong heart of the earth.” To Moore, Pow-Wows offer the opportunity for continuing the circle of friendships and honoring her ancestors in the Native American tradition. The first Fort Cherokee/Sacred Ground Pow-Wow/Festival was held last year, and was so successful, that supporters urged her to continue the tradition. The festival is open to the public. No admission is charged and free parking is available. Pow-Wow officials recommend that attendees bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. Due to health and safety regulations, pets are not permitted on Pow-Wow grounds.
