In 1990 there was a powwow in the City of Industry, CA (SoCal). Haystack was the host drum, their first time in SoCal. Jonathan Windy Boy was the lead singer. Women's fancy shawl and jingle dress were combined. One of their contest songs was a crow hop, Darlene Beetso and Tiffany Begay crow hopped in a jingle way with the fancy shawl dancers. |

If you go on PowWow TV here, on page 20 of the listings there is a Crow Hop demonstration from the NMAI Powwow of 2005 and both men and women participated. Also, in the Red Earth Powwow this year the crow hop was part of the multi-song PowWows.com contest and, again, both men and women contested...

Hahahahaaaa......
Okay after sittin for 2 days and 4+ more hours with Dale Oldhorn tellin me all the Crow stories this one I know for sureeeeee. Crow hop, doublebeat songs and dance all come from the Crow Agency. Listen to them old songs from Maddog and other groups up in Montana. Both men and women honor this style, no woman (at least from the stories I know) have never been turned away. In fact Marjorie Oldhorn just held a womens northern traditional oldstyle crowhop contest at Atsa Butte Powwow this year. Even though Keres Nation sang the song, it was one of the Maddog songs, dooooooots, this contest was beautiful. The ladies in their buckskins dancing this style.......dang, brought me back in the day. But if you want to know something ask a Crow, LOL. Don't just assume everything you hear, get it from the Crow's mouth....ayeeee. Ain't nutton like mutton.....haha

I just wanted to add something real fast...
I'm from Michigan, I've been to walhpoe, I've been to every res powwow in this state, and I've been going to these powwows for 15 years. I've never seen a drum stop because a woman was in the arena for a crow hop, I've never seen anyone in an uproar over a woman dancing a crow hop, the only thing I've ever actually heard is that a woman shouldn't be in a sneak up... Personally, I could care less. Powwows are to dance and have fun - Remember that. I remember alot of women in crow hops when I was in flordia (Other than tampa, AICIA (Orlando), and hollywood (yes flordia, where we all waited until 4am monday to get paid) There are a few families in flordia who are from old blood, but some of their teachings are just a little.... odd to me. One guy I know in flordia who is actually pretty well versed is Bodie Ward, I'd also look up the Narcomy's (reside in GA, but attend alot of flordia powwows).. I can't say there's alot of people down there I'd goto for advice... It has been 5ish years since I've been that way. Good luck, and just remember, a powwow is for fun, if the 'powers that be' continue to give you a hard time, move to kentucky, ga, heck.. Just about anywhere except for ohio or flordia :) Last edited by Steffan Redhawk; 07-17-2007 at 11:10 AM. Reason: spelling error |

Double Beat Crow Hop is my SPECIALTY!! I love it!! As a Crow style dancer, the double beat is our "signature" dance. Every year at Crow Fair the women's Crow Style gets 2 styles of songs that we compete to, a straight northern song & a DOUBLE BEAT. We don't get a round dance song.....so when we compete at other powwows & have to dance to a round dance, we welcome it. Since we're considered traditional dancers, i see the DOUBLE BEAT as a traditional style of dance & think it should be given to us in contest more often. a few wknds ago I competed at Thunder Falls, they gave us a double beat for our 2nd song on sunday & i was SO EXCITED!! It's rare that they give us a double beat in womens tradish. Some of the ladies were pissed that we were given that song, but i thought it was very fitting. If you're going to compete, i think it's very important to learn the styles of dance & the songs that could be given to any category in contest, respectfully. I had to learn to dance to southern round dance songs after i lost out on a special because it was womens tradish North vs South & we got a rounder from each direction. I over stepped on my southern song....it just pushed me to want to learn the songs. In todays powwow world, you have to be a well rounded dancer!

p.s. & for those that claim the crow hop is an imitation of the bird, the Crow....it isn't....we aren't pecking our heads around & stomping our feet!! Its unfortunate this has been taught to people.
The Crow people aren't even NAMED after that bird....we are "The children of the large beak bird" to make a long story short...due to mixed translation we were named Crow.
