Sixth Annual Permian Basin Intertribal Powwow takes place this weekend

From Staff Reports

The Trans-Pecos American Indian Association will host its Sixth Annual Permian Basin Intertribal Powwow Saturday and Sunday at Odessa College Sports Center.

Beginning with the Grand Entry processional march at noon Saturday, the powwow runs until 10 p.m. Saturday with a dinner break from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event continues noon Sunday until 6 p.m.

The event offers performances from up to 300 various Indian dancers and drummers from South Dakota and Albuquerque, N.M. This is the largest two-day powwow between El Paso and Fort Worth. Attendants can try varied cuisine such as Navajo tacos, buffalo burgers and roasted corn. Vendors will also sell Native American arts and crafts.

Though there is an estimated 9,000 self-identified Native Americans living in the Permian Basin, the public is encouraged to attend the pow-wow and learn about Native American culture. West Texans will also be joined by Native Americans from across the country including several tribal chiefs.

Luis Tijerina, executive director of the Trans-Pecos American Indian Association, said the event celebrates Native American cultures, attempts to keep traditions alive and educate both the younger generations and the public about those traditions.

Admission is a $1 donation and two cans of food for adults and one can of food for children.
